$13.9 million dollar the price of Borders list

I mentioned before the B&N bought borders website, database (include the customer list). I was shocked how expensive is that almost $14 million.

What is more interesting B&N is shutting down the Borders website in Oct 14, apparently that was the price of the list and visitors of Borders website.

Sorry again for Borders, it seems that their trademark will be gone soon.

I tried but couldn't find the amount of outstanding gift card balances at the time the were all nullified. Gift cards and rebates are clever exploits of human nature IMs can learn from.

I made an online order to use up the last gift card I had, 6 hours before they all expired. Seemed to go OK, but got a notification the next day that the order was cancels and that I would receive a replacement gift card.

    Some other stats:

The company listed $1.29 billion in debt and $1.27 billion in assets in a filing in United States Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.

(Looks like the website accounted for about 1% of total assets)

Borders owed $178.8 million to its vendors, including publishers, and $18.6 million to its landlords.

The Chapter 11 filing lists 30 publishers as creditors to Borders. Penguin Putnam holds the largest claim, at $41 million, followed by Hachette Book Group, at $37 million, and Simon & Schuster, with $34 million.

For $14 million they got 40 million new customers, that sound like a pretty good deal to me. That's like 35 cents a customer, isn't it?

But were they new customers? That list contained two groups who IMO were likely large percentages

Group 1: People who were shopping at both aka already on their list
Group 2: People who hate B&N and didn't want to shop there. Likely former customers that B&N pissed off.

My guess is out of that 40 million that maybe half fell into these groups. Maybe more.

But still I figure they got at least 14 million people added to their list and $1 a person isn't bad especially if some of them turn out to be loyal book buyers who can be brand converted.

Not really, as the $14 million wasn't solely a purchase of a customer list, but also the brand, and importantly, the website + domain.

$14 million for 40 million people. Well I think they will make at least 20 times that amount in the year to come.
