(conversion) letter with a video message or without. make a (huge) difference?

I have been selling a same product over a few years and it's been selling well. I use a voice message on my sales letter and my conversion is not bad. So I have not changed it for a long time (initially I tested a lot though) and concentrated on marketing. But these days a lot of marketers are using video messages on their letters and some people go as far as saying video is necessity now.So I'm thinking about trying it out and see how my conversion will change.
But I wondered in general is there any research/test which shows a sales letter with a video message does convert better? I know it depends on your product, and also it's affected by how you put the video, what kind of video, the content of video etc.
But I'm curious to know if there is a general consensus that using a video message converts better. Also if you could share personal experiences (positive or negative - huge change or no change etc.) that would be appreciated.

(I'm not talking about using the video to show how a piece of software works, for example...it is about giving your potential customers a direct message through the video)
