Can I purchase a UK Domain name from overseas?

Hi there,

I'm not based in the UK but I'm wanting to invest in some .co.uk domain names as that's my market base. Is this allowed from a domain ownership point of view?

If not what are the requirements to own a .co.uk domain name? Also while I'm at it I have the same question for .ca domain names..

thanks

as long as your host is selling it you can buy it. unlike .us domains with co.uk you dont need any residency proof or shizz of this sort

      Yes, it is.

It's not like the ".us" domain with which you have to some legitimate connection with the country to register one.

You can register a .co.uk domain through any registrar who sells them.

This is true, Eskimoto, but it's very bad advice. Your own hosting company is the one place you should never register a domain. Registering and hosting in the same place is all downside and risk, with no benefit. For all the reasons explained in this post (and then some!).

I buy and hopefully sell .de names and .ca names all the time. I have tried to buy .eu names from the U.S. with no luck. I have a friend who has to travel for business to Europe about once a month and he and I have a partnership going. He registers the names through his company's office in Slovenia and I try my best to sell them. I'm 4 out of 10 so far. Way easier than fighting for dot coms. Never tried to buy a U.K. name. Why don't you go to Godaddy (or whom ever) and try. It'll give you an error message if its not allowed from where you are. (My tip of the day, avoid die diebe at SEDO.)

I have seen them offered in Namecheap but have not purchased any. I guess you could try reading the information in Namecheap or just try to purchase one.

Just bought my first .co.uk domain the other day via NameCheap (they don't actually register the domain themselves, but the process is all automated, so you can renew and manage the domain via NameCheap)

That's good to know. Not my usual registrar but I'll remember this.

Yes, you can. GoDaddy do them, but you can get abetter deal from Heart Internet Domain names, domain hosting - register domains - Heart Internet (not an affiliate link).
