Is it realistic for a newbie to make sales using adwords and affiliate marketing?

Hi all,

So there are two ways, more or less, to do affiliate marketing...and please correct me if I am wrong.

1. PPC either sending people to YOUR landing page, or linking up your Hoplink/Clickbank affiliate URL to the adwords ad to get credit for sales

2. Create your own landing pages, drive traffic to said landing pages, and hope they convert into sales for the affiliate product/service.

Regarding #1, how realistic is it for a newbie to throw $10-$20 a month for a certain set of keywords/phrases and link them directly to the product/service using the affiliate hoplink/clickbank link and actually generating a relative profit...such as $100?

Is the market too saturated to do such a thing, or is it still realistic?

It is realistic - but you need to do a lot of research to make it work for you.

You will most likely need to spend a lot more than $20 or so to get any decent results.

You are better off driving traffic for free first until you work out what works and what does not and then start looking at Adwords as you can rack up a bill very quickly.

  • For newbies, I think you are best off to avoid PPC advertising, and the reason for this is because too many newbies out there lose money on Adwords because they don't know what they are doing. For some newbies, getting clicks is the main goal, but if the clicks you are getting are from untargeted keywords, linking to a badly designed landing page, you are going to lose money fast.

I think the second strategy you mentioned is much better for newbies, because its free, so if you mess something up, it won't cost you any money. If you do use the second strategy, it is easiest to focus on long tailed keywords without a lot of competition, and long tailed keywords are typically more targeted than keywords consisting of only one or two words.

When you have success with the free methods and you find out what works best for you, then its easier to translate that into sucessful PPC campaigns.

You might have to lose some money early on in testing. Do not use direct linking as that can affect your quality score and you will struggle to get it back up in the long term. Start up with a landing page and slowly build up.

I think perfecting adwords is more important than knowing CPA itself as it could be a big change in the amount of $ you make a day.. Read up on adwords tools and im sure it will help you profit more.

    It's definitely realistic...

PPC is definitely one of the best places to start... just be conservative.

Many people will tell you to stay away from it starting out because you might lose a lot of money...

Here's the deal... even when you have tons of experience with PPC--you can still lose money.

Experts lose money with PPC everyday...

Just accept the fact that just like everything else, there is a learning curve. Will you lose a little money? Maybe... maybe not!

Of course the chances of you losing money is greater but, that's business.

Instead of running away from PPC... try studying it thoroughly.

Do a Google search for Perry Marshall... skim through is catalog. You will find tons of great PPC products that you can invest in.

Another thing, don't limit yourself to just PPC... there are many other things that you can do to get traffic.

Even though I've publicly stated that "article marketing sucks" I can not deny that it's a powerful source of driving traffic in addition to Blogging, Video Marketing, and Social Media sites.

But choosing to stay away from PPC because you can lose money with it, In my opinion, would be absurd.

Every successful business loses money from time to time. In the long haul they usually make more than they lose--which is what your goal should be.

Educate yourself on PPC, be conservative starting out, make calculated decisions, then pull the trigger.

PPC is a very powerful weapon. So don't leave it in the holster!

Good Luck with whatever you decide!

    Marc
