3 Reasons Why Internet Marketing Beginners Fail To Make Any Money

Hi Warriros,

Internet Marketing beginners are failing faster than ever before. In this post I'd like to share 3 reasons why they fail to make any real money online, and at the end of the post I also provide 3 tips any beginner can use to help them in their Internet Marketing journey so that they can start earning their first money online.

There are a lot of people out there who are interested in making money on the Internet, there's no doubt about that.

The problem is these people typically don't have a clue where to start making their first money. More often than not, they are also wary about making real money online, fearing that it is just some kind of scam.

These Internet Marketing beginners usually fail miserably as well, meaning they fail to earn any money. Even if they do, it's just a few cents or dollars here and there.

In my opinion, there are 3 reasons why they often fail to make any money online:

1. They don't want to work hard and they want instant results

If you want to achieve any real results, be it in the Internet Marketing field or any other field, you need to put in hard work and dedication first.

Not only that, you also need to be patient. There is no such thing as instant results!

It is also worth keeping in mind that most of the time you will face setbacks and failures, even though you've put in all the hard work and time.

It is through these setbacks and failures that you learn more about Internet Marketing and how it really works.

2. They give up easily

When beginners fail temporarily, they feel down immediately and when this happens, they usually give up.

I use the words "fail temporarily" because that is what I meant, fail temporarily. To achieve real results, you need to experience failures first.

There is no beginner who suddenly achieves success overnight without experiencing any setbacks or failures first.

Let me say this one more time just to make my point: you can't expect to be making lots of money overnight when you are just starting out in your Internet Marketing career, and you simply can't achieve success without experiencing some kind of failures first. It's not about if, it's about when.

You should treat temporary failures as new lessons you learn that will move you closer to your end goal.

3. They don't know where to start

Everybody must have experienced some kind of information overload at times. Even if you are not a beginner, I believe that sometimes you are also overwhelmed by the humongous amount of information out there about Internet Marketing.

This is called "information overload".

Information overload simply means that the amount of information you receive is so much that you have a hard time digesting them, and in the end you are left confused as to where to begin.

In Internet Marketing, we are often thought that you should learn about the tips and tricks of Google Adwords so that you don't burn holes in your pockets, or that you should learn about effective article marketing to get as much traffic as you can to your websites.

Or maybe you read somewhere that you ought to learn about the latest social bookmarking or SEO secrets to drive large amount of visitors, or perhaps learn how to JV (joint venture) with other marketers so that you can take advantage of their huge lists, etc.

The truth is there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

Since these beginners don't have an idea where to start, most of the times they will say to themselves: "Man there is so much to be done and I'm really confused. Never mind, I'll take a break for now and I'll study them sometime later".

Sounds familiar, eh?

And you know what? That "sometime later" never comes, and that means there will be no ACTION.

When you are confused as to where to start working on your Internet business, stop everything you are doing and spend some time to think and realize where you are now.

What I mean by that is you need to know your current position first if you want to move forward.

For example, let's say that you are a beginner in the Internet Marketing niche. If you are a beginner, you don't have to learn how to JV (joint venture) with other high profile Internet marketers because 99.99% of the time your JV proposal is going to be rejected.

Try to put yourself in these high profile Internet marketers' shoes. Say you are a very reputable Internet Marketer and one day a beginner approaches you and request a JV with you, would you accept his offer?

Unless his offer is so irresistible and sensational, 99.99% of time you are going to reject him straight in the face right?

The point I'm trying to make is that you simply need to focus on doing the things that are important and beneficial to you NOW.

Going back to the above example, if you are a beginner it would be a lot better if you focus your time and effort in learning how to do effective article marketing or forum marketing to drive traffic rather than learning how to JV.

Do you know that not all types of work have the same priorities? Some work are more important than others, depending on where your current position is.

Have you heard of the Pareto Principle?

Taken from Wikipedia:

"The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule, the law of the vital few and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes."

This means that 20% of the work you do account for 80% of the results.

Conversely, 80% of the work you do account for 20% of the results.

Your job is to find out which 20% of the work will lead to 80% of your results, and then focus on this 20%.

These 20% are usually work that matter the most to you RIGHT NOW. Thus, if JV will have very little to no results for you right now, then you don't have to learn the skills of JV right now. You can always learn them later when you have established yourself as a proven Internet Marketer.

So today's tips for you are:

1. Get ready to work hard and smart if you want to achieve any real results. Also realize that achieving success is a long and hard-fought process, not just some get-rich-quick scheme.

2. Strengthen your mind and realize that in order to achieve success, you WILL experience setbacks and temporary failures. You need to deal with these failures and learn from them, and just keep moving forward.

3. Focus only on 20% of the work that account for 80% of the results. These 20% are usually work that matter the most to you RIGHT NOW.

    Interesting article.

Number 1 is often the case because some marketers make it sound easy.

I wrote a report addressing many of these issues yesterday and it had similar conclusions - Mindset, system and doing the right things.

      No.1 is just human nature.

The thing is that IM CAN be easy (once you know what you are doing). But there is a huge difference between 'easy' and not having to work hard.

Like most things in life you get out what you put in.

It's dynamic as well. Ever evolving. Your bizz works great ine day and then stops the next. Much faster than offline. So you better be prepared to keep upto date and ahead of the wolves.

It's a lot tougher than many gurus tell you it is but I guess that's marketing.

I agree with you 100%. I think that many get into this business out of desperation and see so many pitches for instant riches that they get caught up in the hype.

Imagine if the ad read " Make $35.00 a Week for 10 Weeks Until You Figure Out Your System" You would not make a dime off that ad but that is the result that most successful marketers start out getting before they kick into a slow and steady growth.

Everyone dreams of the "Lottery" style product that will bring in a quick $100,000 in eight days. That happens after you've got an infrastructure and a lot of buddies who can send your product launch to their list.

Until then, you've got to work it till you make it.

I was sitting in a meeting yesterday and the speaker gave a list of three items that would help make a person successful in the field that we were discussing. The more I thought about it, the more I though that this applied to those in the Internet Marketing arena. The three words are passion, persistence, and perseverance. If you have a passion for what you do in the internet marketing world, if you are persistent and even in the toughest situation continue to persevere, you will succeed.

The important thing is to focus on the things that matter to you the most Right Now.

I understand that there are a lot of things that needs to be done, and you can't do everything at once. Just do it one step at a time and start taking consistent action on 1 thing, be really good at it, and then move on to the next thing.

                  Hope that helps.

Yes i believe that 100%. Its so true when they say "it takes money to make money".

There are some people that strike gold with no investment but that usually takes a lot longer and takes a lot of luck when it comes to choosing the right path to follow in IM.

I would think that at least 95% of newbies would fail and give up when trying IM. This would be due to the hype of get rich quick products that newbies are bombarded with when they first start searching.

I probably sound very selfish saying this but im very thankfull that all those hyped up products exist, could you imagine what the competition would be like if every newbie came across this forum from the start. So many more newbies would succeed and i think that IM is flooded already.

I sort of look at it like Darwin's theory where natural selection weeds out the weak and un dedicated where only strong and persistant survive and thrive.

                  Responsibility

                  You cannot give response-ability away.

Information overload is another way of
                  saying "procrastination blamed on others".

                  Instant gratification is procrastination.

Focus on one thing, get extremely good at
it, then identify what's next - seek it and
do not wait for it to show up in your inbox.

Rome was not build on instant gratification.

If you want to get started, start at a place where you feel most comfortable. Unfortunately, the marketing journey never ends. Then again, it isn't the destination, it is the journey itself that sucks you in.

I am going to chime in on the reason why most newbs fail. It all comes down to skill sets...

                  1. They don't understand business- I read an excellent post here from a warrior who basically could break down how much each subscriber was worth to him. It is easy to make a couple hundred dollars a month in marketing. But once you have moved to the next tier and are serious, you will need to understand how to break things down. If you aren't good with metrics and math, you are going to have a long way to go.
                  2. They don't understand the internet and how it works- If your computer skills start and stop at "copy & paste", then you are going to have to invest a little time in learning things. This includes SEO (if you are building sites), Some Graphic Abilities, and a mix of additional skills that most marketers know.
                  3. They don't understand marketing- Copywriting, the ability to write well and more importantly what moves people. These are all workable and attainable skills to learn. Understanding basic marketing techniques is the pinnacle of marketing, online or off.
I think that most intermediate to advanced marketers are "renaissance" marketers meaning that they know a little in a lot of different fields. Get out there, start learning and applying what you learn.

You will fail. But it is in your failures that you will start to be able to hone your skills.

There is no such thing as an overnight marketer. The marketer has to learn a bevy of skills before they can truly compete in the market. That is one of the truths that most of the gurulicous marketers don't want to tell you. But as you continue to learn, you will get closer and closer to the truth.

The saddest reason why internet marketing beginners fail is because they are on the wrong track with no guidance.

They are honest people who work their asses off but get no where. If this applies to you, get a mentor or befriend a knowledgeable Warrior.

                Yes definitely true.

I'd say from what I've seen the # 1 reason beginners fail to make money is they simply never take any action at all.

And the internet marketers who've been around longer fail for exactly the same reason...they never take any action.

So they're more educated internet marketers with no real experience.

If you want to make the money you have to do enough work to:

                1. Get some real world experience.

                2. Get some results.

You can't get rich in internet marketing sitting on your arse twiddling your thumbs.

                Kindest regards,
                Andrew Cavanagh

I love that way of explaining marketing, or (I guess) split-testing. I like to refer to a similar-sounding quote by Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga. It refers to studying something versus doing something, and it's very simple:

    1% Theory, 99% Practice.

        Number one reason IMO is:

        They are not selling anything!

        Or...

They are not consistently selling anything to anyone.

They do not have a squeeze page or site or offer where
        they constantly send/drive/promote prospects to.

        To go on with this...

They dont know how to drive traffic

They've never spent more than $25 on
paid traffic, and they've never done a JV

Most rely on free traffic, and wonder where the money
is at the end of the day.

Show me someone who is not making money online
and I'll show you someone who is not focused on
        2 things...

        1) Targeted Traffic
        2) Conversions

They spend most of their time on everything else
besides those two most important things.

Your time should be spent mostly on those two
things, and not much else. Spend 70% of your
time on those two things (which is probably 100%
more than current) and you'll start really playing in
        this game.

Everything else is just pretend business

        HOWEVER

there are a billion reasons why people dont do
the above, and many of the mindset posts in
        this thread hit on them.

The three P's was mentioned (Great!)

        There's also the three D's

        Desire
        Determination
        Discipline

        As far as mindset:

        lack mentality
get rich quick and dont treat this like a real business
        lottery mindset
        poor work ethic
        lack of confidence
        comfort zone
dont understand the power of building leverage
        are reactive instead of pro-active
blame everyone and everything except themselves
and my favorite -- dont seriously "want" more and
willing to do what ever it takes to "get" more

Focus on building a business you can sell.

        That's a real business

this is still business... not pretend business.

Lastly, ask yourself... are you focusing on
traffic & conversions? If so, you're most likely
making money. If not, you know why.

Anyway... not a bad post. damn, I'm proud

          Hi Eric,

          Excellent post!

          Consistency is the keyword.

Many times, most people dont make money because there is no consistency.

They did it once or twice and dont make money, concluding that IM is a scam.

Consistency takes a person a long and plus perseverance, this person is going to be successful in the long term.

whenever i had to do something, not regarding im but it can be applied everywhere. now some of you might think this stupid but i always write my goals and what i have to do somewhere where i will see it very often so i don't give up. a good example would be: in 2005 i was at the World Cyber Games (a kind of world championship for videogames) with my counter-strike team, ended up in the 21 position world-wide, but me and my team-mates werent happy...so when the 2006 wcg approached i made a desktop wallpaper white...with a black writing..i wrote that i want the team to get in the top 15, that i have to train x map and x strategy and some more couple of things...and for me that worked..cus whenever we did a practice match and we loose or something i was disappointed of the team..but then when i exited the game i saw my wallpaper telling me "keep going".... and we did get in the top 15 in 2006, actually 12th place.

    Great article. Thanks.

You know about the 80-20 rule you mentioned... The biggest pain I feel as a beginner is when I invest lots of time and/or cash into something that is not all that necessary I mean... I had a couple things I got really stoked about and after getting the stuff, I realized that I won't be able to do it now, because I was focusing on something totally different...

    you know what I mean?

So I think focus is the key.

Focus on your stuff. Of course read good copy, but don't buy only because you can afford something

I think a safe thing for anyone to invest in is their list. No matter if you are a beginner or a seasoned marketer, a list would do you good. So when you choose a market you want to get into, the first thing I believe you should do is set up a list building mechanizm.

Believe it or not but it took ma about a year and a half to learn this... If only I knew this when I was starting up...

    Take care.

People fail because they expect too much too soon without any real work. They can't be blamed anyway, as there's too much hype surrounding IM.

The key is to treat IM just like another offline business where you need to put in hard work and dedication, and persevere.

Then, don't worry that you didn't fall into a $10K a month revenue stream. Enjoy the small successes and build on them to reach your goals. In time you'll get there IF you stay focused, committed and are willing to do the work.
        Hi BIG Mike,

        Great analogy you have there.

The problem is people are so used to instant gratification nowadays.

They want everything fast and now.

With so much hype in IM, they also want the BIG money NOW.

So they are not willing to wait and the BIGGEST obstacle is IN FACT their own MINDSET.

        My 2 cents,

Many internet marketers say: "Internet marketing is so easy and you will make 100k in your first 2 seconds. With my system you will make 100k in 1 second or less guaranteed, thats why buy my system it's really that easy"
And the product usually gives youa rough idea not going in any details...

          My observation...

The thing that took me the longest to accept is that I am selling me first. It's the old First Impression thing. You must believe in yourself and the product you are promoting or nobody else will.

Yes, that is what they always tell you.

By the way, they forgot to mention in their sales page they have spent the last 5 years perfecting their system.

"That is always left out on purpose.

I think it's due to lack of direction. As we all grow up, we go to school to learn how to work at a job. There is not formal education that shows us how to make money on the internet. Therefore, a newbie has lack of direction and is often completely overwhelmed at all the information that's available on the internet.

I think the average person knows that they will have to work hard at... something. They just may be putting their efforts into doing the wrong things, which leads to 0 results.

Good article though. It definitely makes some people aware of their mistakes.

I've yet to meet one of these people who think they will get rich quick with no work. I think there are far fewer of them than you might think. I also think even someone who gets excited over a sales letter, starts dreaming about riches, and buys the product knows deep down that there will be work involved.

Simon_Sezs post makes more sense to me about why than the original one does.

The top reason is probably more along the lines of people not knowing how to put the puzzle pieces together. They've heard about this and that and don't know what order to do things or how to do some of the steps.

I can remember putting up the first site and not even realizing I had to do something to get people to it- like they would eventually find it somehow. There is probably a lot of silly thinking like that going on.

Wow! Lots of good stuff here.

Speaking just from my own personal experience I think it's all about #1 and info overload. At least this is what I'm seeing from my subscribers.

It's really weird, I have a large group who jump on everything with all the passion of an over sexed Frenchman but still see crap results. So they jump from thing to thing to thing... never really taking the time to look at what's going on.

So the testing is important. But how do you know what to test if you don't know how to write solid copy that pulls people in...

Stuff is hard to break into, but once you know the basics you're off to the races.

Lots of folks said it, but it's really about: Copy/Consistency/Keeping it up.

Once you learn to see what failed and why you can start to tweak it out.

I've gone back to projects I tried way back in the day... looked at them with a new set of eyes, made just a few small changes and now some of those projects make money.

Its human nature to gravitate to others who have the knowledge that you internally seek no matter what arena your in.

However you also have to look inside yourself and honestly ask if you have what it takes to be diciplined?

My answer to that is yes, that everybody has this within themselves.

It can be adopted very quickly when you start to see results no matter how small these results may be.

To make your first few dollars online no matter if its $5 or $20 is the most motivating factor and really is all you need to be successful online.

Making your first buck on-line can be compared to a dog who smells a steak, and will make depressed, scattered, and otherwise aimless marketer snap out of a trance in a heart beat.

Because once you make your first buck on-line its all about rinse and repeat baby!

I've noticed how many successful internet marketers first hit really bad times, suffering financially and mentally before turning things around and finally coming through. I wonder if this is a coincidence or a pattern. When you want something bad enough you find a way - giving up simply isn't an option.

It is sad but true that unless you have a good mentor from day one that Internet Marketing can be a very painful experience both financially and emotionally. You have made some very good observations there which should be a word to the wise.

                regards,

Yep. I've gone through all 3 of them. The root of the problem seems to be a fear of failure. A lot of the time you keep on running these scenarios in your head, but you never go out and do anything because it's so much work and you're thinking: "Oh no, what if I fail?" "Wait, I'll go out and try that new system: How to be a billionaire in 2 hours."

I think another issue is that marketers try to go out and make a killing.

They try to find the one thing that will make them rich and retire.

When they should be concentrating on making that first $5 or $20

Then systemize the process and duplicate.

Why re-invent the wheel when you have just proven that you can make money, even if its is only $5?

The Pareto principle is definitely something that doesn't get talked about enough. Granted, it's always written about but I don't know if people really realize what it means.

For example, back in the day, I would focus on checking email, looking at Google Analytics, etc. That stuff doesn't make you money (directly). Of course, everyone needs to check email and study their site traffic to improve and respond to customers. However, it doesn't get you more traffic. It doesn't sell your product. So, it probably isn't the best use of time.

I like your tips at the end of the article. Strengthening the mind is an important idea for everyone, especially entrepreneurs. There will be days when you get no traffic, no sales, and everything seems to fall apart. It's at these times that we need to buckle down and push through it.

An interesting idea that I read about a few years ago stated that there are usually 4 ways to get through a wall...over it, under it, around it, or through it. Most people try to break through a wall and eventually they do. However, what if they were to try the other ways? Strengthening the mind enables new solutions to come up.

    Great article!

Hahaha spending countless hours checking your google analytics stats eh? I had the same problem back then when I just got to know IM.

And you know what's even funnier? I'd just check to see that stats, without actually doing anything to try to improve them. So it's just like what you said - just checking the stats don't do anything unless you try to improve on them...lol

On the topic of continuity, I think when you also have a day job, it's not so easy to go back to what you were so excited about the previous evening when you can't remember where you left off. Many of us have busy lives and have just a few hours in the evening to do our IM, then it's time for bed, off to work the next day, where a different scenario is playing, come back home, and it's tough to get back in the groove! I would love a 1-month stretch where I didn't have to be at work and I could just do my current IM project from beginning to end without endless interruptions. Unfortunately for me, the only way to do this is to lose the job. Not ready yet... but I have big dreams!
