How One Keyword-Rich Blog Post Title Made Me over $700US

My WordPress blog is almost 3 years old now. Time flies when you're having fun! For the last 2 years some of my WordPress blog posts and pages have consistently been in the top 10 searches in Google for various keywords. One of those phrases made me in excess of $700 in unexpected income. I will give you that keyword phrase so you know I know what I'm talking about and then I will explain more.

The keyword phrase is:
"The Lord of the Rings Template and Theme"
As you can see from the screenshot below, I have the 2 top spots in Google.

The way I made the money was a Lord of the Rings fan, who was specifically looking for a custom guild web site to be built for a group of LOTRO players, found me while searching for LOTR templates and themes. I ranked first, he checked me out, liked what he saw (I guess), I built the site and got paid.

The thing is, I just happen to be a huge Lord of the Rings fan and Tolkien lover too. So talk about a dream custom project landing in my lap all because of my nice top 10 ranking in Google for those specific keywords. I also think my love of the lore of LOTR attracted that project to me, but that is a whole other discussion.

I'm convinced that writing a keyword-rich blog post title along with 1 or 2 more mentions of the keyword or phrase within your original content, can get you ranked quite well quickly. Using "pretty permalinks" is another way to add more keyword density to your blog. I also recommend that you have Google Webmaster Tools set up in a Google account, have Google Analytics installed on your blog, and have the Google Sitemap Generator Plugin for WordPress installed. Make sure Google can find your blog.

The other secret to success I use is giving away a ton of free stuff. The templates and themes I give are viral because many people very kindly leave the credit link back to my site in the template footer intact. Those people give me a ton of inbound links. Your free reports, articles, newsletters - whatever you can give away free - should have a link back to your site/s and I truly believe the more you give, the more you get.

I posted this thread to perhaps inspire more people to really look at the WordPress blog as a very good way to get found quickly and make money as long as you follow some key steps as I outlined above. All of which didn't cost me a penny, by the way. I don't promise you'll make millions overnight...lol... but you can make money.

Happy Blogging!

Thanks heaps for the post Kaz.
Got my cogs ticking over here.

I guess the LOTR niche will be popular for many a year too.

yes, and now that LOTRO Mines of Moria expansion is out, there are even more LOTRO players and potential buyers of LOTR stuff. It's not a huge niche but it is a passionate niche. Those kinds of niches are gold-mines, I think.

So find a "passionate niche", set up a blog, drive traffic to it, give stuff away, make money from your knowledge. Rinse and repeat.

If I were you I would remove this, somehow delete all this info.

If your not moving this, someone will use the same phrase and take the number 1 position.

I like the info, but, do you dare to risk this?
yes, I do, because we live in an abundant universe. There is enough business for everyone so competition doesn't worry me. If someone takes over the number 1 position, that's fine..I have other keywords that rank that I did not reveal

but thanks for your concern, Morten..that is very nice of you.

I love this attitude and feel the same way. I would like to see the Internet become a more content driven arena where we are all trying to improve our understanding of our subjects. As a result, Google and the other search engines reward us on our progress. It becomes a win, win, win, experience for the entire online community.

That does not mean that we can't also be a little cleaver with our knowledge of words and keywords to get more responses which give us an opportunity to sell our ideas or products.

You are such an angel for releasing this tip!

If I have your skills, I will scale, scale and scale! As you know, there are sooooo many blockbusters with large fan base. Star war anyone? what about Harry Potter?

yes! absolutely. I have other domains in various stages of development. All niches that I have plans for. But I also discovered that I love teaching people, motivating people, I like to pass on what I learn. Let's just say it's good karma!
