Twitter Tip - The Secrets Are Hidden Right In Front Of You

by ExRat
34 replies
Hi,

Time for a rare ExRat thread.

I was just commenting on another thread that was discussing something, and it became apparent that many people miss the real 'secrets' because they're either -

a) not paying enough attention

b) not in the right frame of mind

c) not expecting to be able to find 'secrets' so easily, possibly because they are conditioned to paying for them

I don't really like using the word secrets, but that's the whole point. Many people are missing a trick, therefore that's what they become.

To the point -

If you get a new follower on twitter and you have the email alerts set up and you click through to see what the person is all about, like me, you probably scan the page that you arrive at and see what they have been saying.

As well as seeing their 'broadcast' tweets, you will also see their @tweets where they have responded directly to someone. Therefore you will probably look at WHO the tweet was sent to, particularly if the tweet itself OR the name of the person is interesting/eye-catching.

In the other thread, it was being discussed that namecheap (a domain registrar) were giving promo space on their home page to their new twitter ID.

It was also mentioned that they had been running a competition on twitter.

What was clever about this was -

a) the competition started again every hour - IE - someone won every hour

b) in order to win, you needed to answer a question (by sending a tweet), then the winner was 'drawn' from all the correct answers

(Is it clicking yet?)

Therefore, they can have thousands of people tweeting them every hour trying to win the prize. If you do the maths, 1000s of people tweeting a name multiplied by many more thousands who see that name in someone elses tweet list is a lot of almost free exposure.

Now let's take this further.

1) make sure that your twitter profile name is as enticing as possible. For example, you could create a new twitter profile called '$100_FREE_EVERY_HOUR' or something along those lines.

2) make sure to use extremely enticing answers to the questions - for example, if there was a phrase or headline in the news, that was very powerful or amusing - EG -

Obama Caught Eating Pickled Onions

Let's say we were scanning the news and let's say The New York Times (just an example) had that ridiculous headline on the front page of their online news portal.

You create a question around the headline, in order to get attention.
So for example, the question could be -

'Tell us the exact headline that is on today's New York Times online news site, which relates to a president to be, and a type of food. Make sure to send the answer in all CAPS in order to win.'

Bingo.

3) Use (and test) whatever methods you can. For example, instead of caps you could tell them that the answer must be inside asterix's like this - *ANSWER*

4) the better the prizes you offer, the more exposure you get (exponentially)

5) every different aspect of this that you can leverage, leads to exponential gains because it is viral - EG - if today you find a much more compelling answer to the question, and you increase the prize fund, your exposure will go through the roof because this is a 'free' viral method.

If one person sees it and tweets about it, and more than one person sees that tweet - you are going viral.

If EVERYONE ends up talking about the fact that most of the profiles they have seen that day have 'Obama Caught Eating Pickled Onions' mentioned somewhere, then they are going to be tweeting each other saying, "what's with all of this pickled onion Obama stuff from XYZ company?'

So you get EVEN MORE exposure to your brand.

You probably WILL end up being hated as a cheap exposure-whore who people are sick of seeing, but if you know anything about buzz, you will know that it's usually a price worth paying to stamp your brand in peoples' minds as a thought-leader.

Any thoughts or additions to this idea that could get even more exposure out of it?

      Hi Valerie,

      Lol.

If you observe how addicted I am to this forum, you should probably understand why I limit my addictions.

I get the most value from here, so the forum wins.

I do follow a few people, but in general I don't actually use twitter. But I did tweet this thread to my pathetically small following, just for kicks.

My main interest with twitter is in using it for stealth promotions and viral exposure-whore promotions - as detailed in this thread. But at the moment I am still mixing potions in 'the lab'.

The 'red light' will be shining brightly soon though...or should that be the 'ExRat light' as designed by Thomas?

    Roger,

    Good point well made.

My first experience of someone exploiting the viral capacities of Twitter with a competition was with Dr Mani. Another quiz with questions every half hour (I think) with winners getting his latest product. At the same time he was offering the product on a gradually increasing price mark to those who couldn't be bothered to enter the comp. Very clever.

Recently, Willie Crawford used the competition angle (to win his personal iTouch player) and entry was an opt-in and re-tweet. A little more simple approach, but again effective.

I didn't label either of them as a 'cheap exposure-whore' - just admired them as excellent marketers.

      Thanks for sharing.

I didn't label either of them as a 'cheap exposure-whore' - just admired them as excellent marketers.
Ouch, lol. Me neither Peter, no labels.

Just pointing out in my usual way that in the scenario I described, where the ID '$100_FREE_EVERY_HOUR' was absolutely all over the place in a successful viral carpet-bombing mission with the words 'Obama Caught Eating Pickled Onions' - it's more than likely that a few people would have less than complimentary things to say about it - which would equal more buzz, but the point was that if it worked, it might be advisable to invest in armour-plating...

The retweet bots will pick up that phrase and you'll get even more
          exposure.
          Aha! Thanks for that.

          Thanks.

Well....I've been a bit outspoken recently, and I regret some of it. But the positive is that in order to redress the balance, I need to put my 'money where my mouth is' and try to demonstrate some of the things I have been outspoken about. I'm sometimes too quick to criticise, and too slow to share the positive things that I take note of.

It's not doing much good bouncing around in the space where my brain should be.

          Hi Paul M,

You're right on the money, haha. I will get the 33 Strategies of War soon, but with 500+ pages to read (I love the stories used as examples of people who followed the laws vs. those who didnt :p) I'm working on integrating the laws that I deem usable into my everyday life, lol.

Also, to those who don't know about the laws, you can get a brief rundown of them at ww(w)2.tech.purdue.edu/cg/Courses/cgt411/covey/48_laws_of_power.htm (can't post links yet, lol) although if you're able to you should get the book, if only for the historical examples

That one little sentence you had sent me into a mini book review, haha.

          Anyways....

People who are using IM, or any other marketing for that matter, has to get over the fear of negative feedback if they haven't already because there's really no such thing as bad publicity. (There's stupid, shameless, making a fool of yourself publicity [i.e. The way the majority of Young Hollywood acts in public], yes. But is it "bad" publicity? Obviously not.)

There are always going to be people who will hate what you are doing regardless, and the internet just gives them a way to whine about it (therefore giving you even more exposure, like you said) while you're putting work in and collecting checks, so I say just focus on the ones who appreciate what you're doing and keep having fun doing it.

          Just my 2 cents

    Roger,

    You've nailed it!

I've run a small number of test competitions and
the results were much better than I expected
simply because, as you have so eloquently pointed
out, people do retweet things that are interesting.

I'll add one additional "tweak" that will make a real
    difference to the virality..

Ask competitors to add the words "Please Retweet"
in your original competition tweet. The retweet bots
will pick up that phrase and you'll get even more
    exposure.

That is a brilliant tip, Roger.

Here's another tip: simply entering into conversations with popular Tweeters will get your name out there and get you more followers - even if that person is NOT following you.

If you type in an @reply to Frank Kern or Jeremy Shoemaker or Chris Brogan or any of the Twitterers who have huge followings, THEIR followers will see it, and are likely to follow you.

Do this right after one of them Tweets something, so that they are more like to answer you back. Obviously add something of value or humor, or ask an intelligent question; don't just say "Good point!" or "Very funny!" or they have no reason to answer you.

The irony is that this kind of response is actually helpful and polarizes the market, making half of them loyal customers. And it will also drive previously timid, cautious, wannabe marketers to completely rise above that level of 'noise' and whole-heartedly go on to their next promotion with red horns, extreme confidence and a desire to see everyone in the land rushing to buy their product - just to get a rise and rile the do-gooders.

They'll probably launch a new range of 'I'm big enough to make my own decisions, thankyou very much' freedom-doughnuts with an image of a raised middle finger on them.

Plus, a bunch of consumers will go and buy a big bag of freedom-dougnhuts next week just to poke a finger in the eye of those who want to poo-poo the freedom celebrations.

Roger, nice thread, great idea. Dana, why can't you play tennis? Florida has nice weather, no excuses there I just shoveled snow off my deck so i have an excuse.

Lack of skill! I COULD play tennis, I would just do it very badly.

    Great thread Roger.

As for the 48 Laws of Power, you can find a lot of great notes, summaries, etc by Googling...

filetype: pdf 48 laws of power
(note: remove the space between filetype: and pdf. I put it there because it kept showing as an emoticon otherwise.)

For example, here's a pretty, cleaned up version in .pdf for anyone who wants it - 48 Laws of Power
And a fantastic book summary here - Summary
