I nearly made a mistake by asking you all a question

Hi All,

I recently read that having to many wordpress plugins can cause a problem with your host.

I was just going to make a post regarding the plugins, I had already added the title "Which plugins are a must have on your blog"

Then it clicked, I have seen lots of posts from you more experienced people where you get a little annoyed with people posting the same question over and over.

So I copied and pasted the title into the search box and found the answers I needed on some great older posts.

The point I am trying to make is I have just ordered hosting for the first time and set up wordpress. Now the earlier thread I read about using to many plugins I believe the guy had his hosting account suspended.

To someone new like me this was rather scary and my first instinct was to ask you all which plugins are necessary before I went and screwed everything up. So sometimes when we ask a question that may seem trivial and has been asked a thousand times before please remember that sometimes we are in such a hurry to get things done we may screw up so go easy on us.

I'm sure sooner or later I will make a mistake on here and get told about it (rightly so) But hey guys, we are only human

Thanks

Jay

You will get the best answer, by asking your hosting company if they have any restrictions on the number of plugins you can use.

Then use that info to ask which ones are the best fit here.

I suspect the issue is not the number of plugins, but the processing level of the plugins you are using. Some plugins use more processing power than others, and that can get you suspended.

Just two weeks ago, my hosting company forced me to upgrade my account, based on my high volume of traffic and "cpu usage" -- or find a different host.

With 50+ domains on the account, it was easier to upgrade.

I don't think any host would have a certain number for accepted plugins.

As you said, Bill, it is not really the number of plugins, per se. It is more about the number of queries to the database and how long those connections are open. Less experienced (read: dumb) plugin authors make half-baked plugins with tons of open connections, heavy load a database (requiring massive CPU usage) - and that's when your host would shut down the site: it's in almost every TOS that you won't use excessive CPU in the detriment of the other sites on the same machine.

Oh, and to the OP: there are NO "must-have" plugins. Anybody saying the opposite... is lying.
