Email Pass: What makes a Marketing email work?

While there are a couple of hot threads going on right now with people voicing out their discontent with the lists they belong to and with the bad marketing emails they receive. I am wondering if we can get a thread started on 'marketing emails' that do work.

Can anyone post examples of marketing emails they received that they did open and read and take action on?

What was it about the subject line that caught your attention?

How long was the email? Did size matter?

Was the content relevant to what you were seeking at the moment?

Just a quick chime in before I go to bed:

I think Matt Furey really has nailed a lot of e-mail marketing, and he calls it his bread and butter.

I know he's a controversial figure, but I would recommend you check out his e-mails: Matt Furey - Zen Master of the Internet

Perhaps his earlier e-mails were even better than his current ones, as he made more outrageous statements, but he's still a darn good e-mail copywriter in my mind!

Matt is truly one of the best. Ben Settle also comes to mind, as do Jeff Walker and Perry Marshall.

To me, it's all about connecting with your audience in a unique way. Building that bridge of trust. If you can get your list to know/like/trust you, you've already made 80% of the sale.
