Default Tech q for IT experts on Migrate XP to Large drive

XP service pack 1 can be used on drives larger than 140gb but earlier versions of xp are not compatible with the larger drives.

If I were to install an earlier version of xp on a smaller drive that it is compatible with and then upgrade to service pack whatever and then use something like Acronis to migrate to the larger drive that only service pack 1+ is compatible with and also at the same time use Acronis to increase the partition to make use of this larger drive...

Do you think I would be out of the woods with the incompatiblity issue of the earler xp version?

Short answer, Josh: Yes, your SP1+ XP disk image will see the larger drive in all its glory.

Done it a few times myself!

Save yourself a bit of time, Make a copy of your XP disc wih SP1 (or even 2 or 3) "slipstreamed" into it, then you can just install directly to the large disk. Google "slipstreaming service pack" for details.

D'Oh.

As an MCSE, I feel *slightly embarrassed* not to have thought of THAT great piece of advice!

If you have an old Win XP (with no SP) CD, you can make a copy that includes the Service Pack and then install this "patched" version of XP directly.

I haven't done this myself but I know it's possible and there should be instructions at the MS web somewhere. It is, for example, necessary with some new motherboards on which it is impossible to install the non-SP version of XP so you need at least the SP1 included on the initial installation media, otherwise you will get a blue screen during the install.
