Writing Effective Facebook Posts

What you see in your Facebook newsfeed isn't magic; it's controlled by a very important algorithm called EdgeRank. Facebook wants users to be engaged, so EdgeRank is a critical aspect of their business. The EdgeRank factors are:
  • Affinity - How often you interact with others (be it visiting a friend's profile or commenting on a page's picture).
  • Edge Weight - The type of content it is. A few types are: Photos, Videos, Status, Place Checkins, becoming friends with someone, liking a page, changing your profile picture, etc. Keep in mind, there are general rules, but everyone's Edge Weight is different and Facebook has carte blanche to tweak things at will.
  • Recency - The older something is, the less likely you are to see it.
With that being said... I'm sure there are businesses, people, groups that you interact with on a daily basis and you see their newsfeed almost everytime you're on Facebook.

My question for you is... what makes their newsfeeds so attractive to you? and how do you interact with them and others that makes you stand out?

Is there a better time or day to post?

Do you write lots of posts each day or just one or two?

Long Posts or Short Posts?

Ask Questions? State Facts? or use Quotes?

Use $'s off or %'s off for coupons?

Looking forward to everyone feedback so we all begin to write more effective Facebook Posts.

I click links that are interesting to me.

I expect most people are the same way.

So effective is best described as link text that tells me why I would want to click and convinces me to do so.

I find it intriguing how wording can affect engagement levels in your Facebook posts.

Have you found that asking questions/polls in your link text get more interaction from your fans/subscribers or just plain keywords?

To be honest, I don't market much on Facebook, because that is the one place where I go online where I communicate more with family than business connections.

But yes, I have found that word choice, questions/polls, and engagement with my audience are key.

Things that make someone's news feed attractive to me is 1)I'm already interested in whatever it is they do (like The Body Odd...I like the weird & interesting facts so I want to see what they post next) 2) I really like Infographics so those get a lot of my attention these days 3) Definitely wording...if they've made it look interesting, I usually have to have a peek! 4) They don't give me rehashed info that I've seen a hundred times already.

There are times that are better to post - I don't remember them offhand but I recently saw a study about it that revealed these times (do a Google search...but do keep your primary audience times in mind - it may be daytime where I'm at but nighttime somewhere else).

I personally prefer short posts (as I do for emails and most of the time for blogs too)...I'm busy, and I'm trying to stay updated on a lot of things so I pay more attention to shorter posts - longer posts usually lose me pretty fast.

Number of posts depends on how much USEFUL information you have to share (but def not tons and tons of posts, you're not going to suck up my whole feed without getting on my nerves FAST!) Mix it up and give me a variety of things and I'll be perfectly fine with seeing several posts for you (and posting a handful of times will give you more of a chance to be seen - your post is constantly making its way to the bottom so many may not see post 1 or post 2 ("Recency").

Ask Questions? State Facts? or use Quotes? - MIX IT UP so use them all! ...in addition to videos if applicable, photos, infographics, etc.

Use $'s off or %'s off for coupons? In my opinion, use whatever will "appear" to have the greatest value to the consumer. It's all about psychology.

    Best of luck!
