Kindle Fire Set to Beat iPad Sales? 254,074 Pre-ordered in the First 5 Days

Estimates are one thing, but purportedly leaked sales data is better: The blog Cult of Android says a “verified source” provided it with “exclusive screenshots of Amazon’s internal inventory management system Alaska (Availability Lookup and SKU Aggregator),” showing that 254,074 Kindle Fires were pre-ordered in the first five days: “over 2,000 units per hour, or over 50,000 per day.” (If accurate, these figures would suggest that eDataSource’s estimate is too high.) This puts the Kindle Fire on track to beat the iPad and iPad 2’s first-month sales, Cult of Android says. The site also says that leaked data shows 20,249 new Kindle Touch WiFis pre-ordered in the first five days, and 12,467 Kindle Touch 3Gs pre-ordered. (I’ve asked Amazon for comment on whether these sales reports are real, but I think a response is unlikely.)

Woah! I'm wasn't expecting that. For some reason I thought that iPad would always come out on top and that Amazon wouldn't be able to quite pull it off.

It seems I was wrong. When they said that the Kindle Fire didn't have a camera etc. I thought that people would be put off. It looks like price is always going to win.

Saying that though, it looks like Amazon is really on to something there with their cloud browser. I watched a couple of demos and the web pages load almost instantly.

I wouldn't mind a Kindle Touch. I'm waiting for them to come out in the UK - we always have to wait!

Amazon is good at what they do, that's for sure. They are actually going to lose money on the hardware, but gain revenue from the Premium service they offer.

Amazon Prime members enjoy unlimited, instant streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows
As for the camera ... I could care less about a camera on a pad device. I have one on my cellphone. The last thing I want to do on a tablet is webcam or take photos.

Great price, that's for sure and it's selling like hotcakes.

I am not a tech guy. I am definitely not an early adopter. I tend to not get caugt up in new things.

    Kindle Fire?

    Want!

It seems to me like they have a real winner on their hands, and they also have a segment of the market that may not be interested in iPads or Androids or whatever else.

Amazon has millions of existing customers, and a large portion of these customers only buy things from Amazon.

Yep. The Kindle Fire will reduce the competition to ash, set the world on fire, create a real spark, insert goofy fire-related pun of your own here.

    All the best,

I'm "blazing" a path to Amazon to preorder right now. It's too hot to pass up. I get a hot flash just thinking about it.

        That's what I'm talking about!

But you know, that got me wondering about meta-marketing concepts. Imagine coming up with a brand name that not only gets people talking, but also ENCOURAGES them to come up with the exact language you would like them to use.

It all seems coincidental, but it's actually intentional.

        Hmm...

I agree. When I saw this reported I went to Amazon's site to check it out. I got pumped!

I talked to my mom who is very anti-tech and set in the old ways. She said she saw it on TV and she even wants one!

There is something about this new Kindle.

As for me, I know about the ipad. But I knew right away it was 1# out of my price range and 2# A status symbol for snobby rich arrogant apple type fan boys.

I don't know to many ipad owners, but I know alot of Kindle owners. And I know a ton of Amazon users, like my neighbors.

Wait, screw commissions I think I need to start putting together a Kindle formatted product!

I just built a guy a review site that included the Kindle Fire. It's supposed to be huge and by your original post it's obviously living up to the pre-sale hype as far as the numbers of those who want it.

I won't be pre-ordering, but I hope my husband will! This is #1 on my Christmas list this year. I'm with the Amazon Vine program and we keep hoping that this will be offered up as a review product, but I kind of doubt it. There's no need because it already has huge buzz. : )

$199 is the "sweet spot" for a LOT of people. This thing is going to sell like hot cakes because of the price & Amazon brand. It's a no brainer. If they release a 10 inch version for under $300 I could see the iPad being in trouble. And I think the only brand that can compete with Apple is Amazon.

The other aspect to this discussion is that the Kindle products work well.
They do exactly what you think they are going to do.
I have a Kindle that has revolutionised my attitude to books. I was sure that I would never stop buying real paper books until my daughter decided to gift me a Kindle. (She's a wonderful girl).

I now have veritable library on my kindle and read much more than previously. (And I used to read a book a week)

The point is the Amazon deliver on their promises. Buyers know this and so are confident to order the Kindle Fire without thinking too hard.

      Burning with anticipation,
      Hot with expectation,

      Kenj

I have the iPad, and at first I didn't think I would want this. But after writing about it I do want to get it. The flash component and free movies for prime members is what is enticing me.

I don't have any of the kindle readers because I like to highlight and fold pages to hold my spot. But, since I have so many reports and eBooks, I think I will be going to the other side. It will be nice to travel without bulky papers.

Cannot wait until this comes out in the UK, I will definitely be buying one!

I have never had a touch pad before but the iPad just never seemed worth the money, but the fire really does seem as it if it is worth the money, especially with it being a fraction of the iPads original price.

This is like comparing apples and oranges.

The Kindle line of products are primarily consumption products. They are strictly for people that consume products.

The iPad is consumption plus creation. You can create documents, photos, movies, etc. as well as view them.

I'm not really seeing the comparison except that both happen to be "pad" devices.

If you look at it strictly from a tablet point of view, they can compete with their lower price of $199. And Amazon has a ton of stuff in their store. So volume is another way. The Fire gives people, who want a pad for reading documents and playing videos or watching TV, the chance to do so without paying a ton of money.

Like I said, I have the iPad but I can't wait for this to be released!

I preordered one the day it became available to do so. For the average person the iPad is just too expensive to be justified, but $200 is much more reasonable for most people. Plus Christmas is coming up. My mom already preordered them for my younger sisters too.

It's a good value if pretty much all you need it for are the basics. It's fast, has great specs...but as with the other Kindles you can't upgrade the 8gb storage (with only 6gb usable right out of the box) as it has no microSD slot. Plenty of room for ebooks and other document types, but not much else.

With a desktop computer and two laptops, I don't need to use the pad as a computer ... I want this Kindle Fire for fun and the Amazon products that will come along with the Premier membership. I already love my regular Kindle and have no doubt I will love this one too

    Very clever idea.

Undercut on price and then make a squillion on product sales. A great marketing lesson for everyone.

Unfortunately it's not available down here.

On a different note: Apple has been taking some serious court action trying to ban Samsung from releasing their tablet before Xmas down here.. and failed.

    Long live competition.
