Wordpress ping list question

I was looking around a WP travel blog I have trying to understand the site and what it is all about. This is more a learning experience than something that I expect to make any money with. I have been thinking about the pinging I have read about and was wondering how that was done and found the "list" (one URL) and thought, so that is where it is supposed to go. I have a ping list saved on my hard drive that I got from someone and it has about 40 URLs. My question is should I actually use that many URLs to ping and is there any downside to a list of that many? Or am I wrong to consider that a long list?

Any other information on pining that anyone would like to share with a newbie would be appreciated.

One other thing I was wondering about is, I don't see anywhere for anyone to subscribe in order to post if they wanted to. Is it possible that I deleted that? My stats tell me that I am getting an average of almost ten visitors a day at this point. No one is staying long so I am not planning on any celebrations yet but I would like to figure this WP thing out so I can start a real blog with some advertising links on it so any information would be welcome.

    Hi,

Good question. I vaguely remember reading a previous post about the importance of chosing which sites to ping as some are in someway associated with others and you don't want to ping them twice for obvious reasons. Can anybody else remember? I just use the list in Amy Bass' TheNicheBlogger.

Other thing to do of course is to install MaxBlogPress optimiser plugin to avoid pinging too frequently (or after you edit existing posts) to avoid your site getting banned.

    Best of luck,

    Andy

Where is her list, and/or could you post the list of ping services here?

      Thanks,

Tim, everything you need to know about pinging and ping lists can be found right on the WordPress site here:
    Update Services WordPress Codex
those guys know there stuff so anything that's on the WP site is worth following.

depending on the theme you're using, the register option may not be visible..but it's there...a link to your blog would be helpful so we can see what's up with your theme and then we can help you with that.

      Thanks Karen,

I will check out that thread. I have the standard install theme as I didn't try to change anything other than delete a few things because of what I read in Atomic Blogging before I just got too confused with it. I finally signed up with Syndicate Kahuna to feed content to it so I could watch and learn. The URL is talkingtravelnstuff.com

okay..you do have the register option enabled on your site...it's under META in your sidebar menu

don't be afraid to play with the SETTINGS options located in your WordPress dashboard.

I swear Karen, I am blind in one eye and can't see out of the other one. Thanks for looking over my site for me. I looked all over the place the other day and could not figure out how anyone could register if they wanted to post something. This is a real learning experience, but hopefully the next one will be something I can make something out of.

  • Anyone know any good automatic pinging software or plugins for WP....i.e that ping automatically when you post without doing any secondary action.

      Hi all

I ran an experiment a few weeks ago on one of my blogs that I had set up to test the effectiveness of PingOMatic

I left the default pingomatic url in the ping list and made sure nothing else was there.

I then posted a bunch of small unique content articles, and then using my server logs watched to see what happened..

I ran this test for about a week, and then swapped it out an put in the url for Pingoat.com

The result was that every time the pingomatic was pinged..
      NOTHING HAPPENED!! NOTHING AT ALL!!

When I ran the pingoat url, I got visits from the G! and Y! almost with the minute..

I guess they have either given up with pingomatic or it is having some serious technical problems and not passing the pings on..

I now always make sure my ping list has a bunch (+10) ping servers in it, so that alteast someone is going to respond to my ping...

      Thought you might be interested

      Take care

      Bruce
