URL redirects/forwarding and ranking

Hi,
I have a main site but bought up all the other domains that correlate with it, such as the .net / .org etc...along with different spelled domains....so my competitors are not able to buy them.

My question is, I initially thought I could make use of them by redirecting them to my main site, in case a surfer typed them in by accident etc. However, now my main site is all screwy with it's rankings. And some days the main site is completely gone from the SERPs and one of the other domain's (with no content attached to it) is ranking for my keywords. I am very confused.

Should I not use those extra domains as redirects or forward them but instead just own them?

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

  • My advice will be to have the first one as your main site. Put all your unique content and don't spam it. And other you can use as backlinks, you can make link wheel. Even you can put the spinned articles on these sites, and than you can link them to the main one, so that this main site increases its authority and PR

Well, yes I could do that if I actually wanted to make a site out of them...but I don't....they are just owned domains that are not hosted...just redirected to main site...
