How do sites like WebMD make money?

They have a few ads, etc., but none in any heat zones. They don't really promote their newsletter. I can't see any major monetization strategy

Are they just putting content out there for the heck of it?

    As is usually the case through ads that appear on their site, including space they rent directly and ad units displaying ads from the Yahoo 350 network, there are a number of ad specification documents on their advertiser page.

      Sorry for the noobish question, but you're basically saying they get paid A LOT of money by allowing others to advertise on their site?

      Anyway to ballpark a dollar figure?

        Try contacting them and act like you're interested in purchasing add space to get a quote, then you may be able to ballpark what kind of revenue they're making, but I imagine it would be very tough to come up with anything accurate.

          One popular way for sites like that to make ad revenue is through CPM of banner ads they display, they get a certain amount of money each time the banner is displayed. Very hands off and because they get so much traffic, they can demand and get high prices for allowing others to display their ads there.

    Advertisements can add up very quickly if you have a massive amount of traffic daily. Very easy to make a lot of cash.
