Image vs Standard Txt Email Marketing

If you're subscribed to Apple's list then you'll notice that their emails are an image of say a new sleek product. Whereas marketers emails are in standard text form with usually 3 hop links. One at the beginning, middle, and of course the end.

Question
: Which do you think is more effective and why?

cheers!

I would say those that have mostly text. Text loads faster than most images and my installation of MS Office (2007) blocks images unless I manually choose to view them.

Yeah txt does load faster than images. But these days (at least in California where I live) everyone uses an iPhone and there's WiFi every where you go.

Can't forget about the slower internet users though..

Chris I go with the text emails and the main reason is that most email clients these days don't automatically download images within their systems. i.e. GMail

So a text email message is always going to display and don't require the reader to take an extra step to find out what you have to offer.

Now, with that being said if you are providing value to your list, after a while you can switch to HTML/Text combination and your readers will accept your images and you can make your newsletter/emails look pretty cool.

I'm not sure about that. I mean I already love Apple's products so maybe that's why I click on the image links. Plus they look very appealing, as where txt readings are like mini sales pitches sometimes.

I guess apple can do it because they have a reputation, and they have tangible products.

Your comparing your emails to Apple though, they are a well respected company who's brand is in the news everyday on every national media outlet around.

In the case of you and I, that brand recognition isn't as broad, hence why you need to build trust with your readers.

Yeah very true, well respected indeed.

Definitely have to establish trust via txt email. I think occasionally though throwing images in there to mix it up could be solid for the readers.

This does have to be tested though, can't just base this from my opinion!

I think that it depends on what you're marketing to people. If people expect discounts or it's a niche where people would want to see a physical product before deciding if they're interested...then it should be good as long as you have formed a positive relationship and have a good reputation. For affiliate marketing, I would go with text emails since they don't need any extra steps to get read and can be a quick read.

I didn't think of it in that manner, very good point. But what if your physical product isn't well known yet?

I never use images in email marketing because many email systems still prefer plain text rather than html. It is slowly changing but images take up more space and need more time and resources to send and recieve, so i personally feel that it will be sometime before one sees images in mainstream email.

The use of email as a marketing tool is lessening due to spam and the like and aslo businesses are also turning to SMS to get there messages accross

      David,

Definitely a great observation. Never thought of it that way before. Maybe with the introduction of the cloud things will start to change eh?

Good ole fashion copy still works though!

Hopefully, your good reputation and relationship will make them interested in learning what useful item you have to show them now. If a list likes me and/or the previous products that I've sent within HTML mail...then they'll probably be curious. But there are definitely a lot of things to take into consideration.

I agree with Steve, a short, focussed text based email would seem to work best.

I'm on a number of lists as well as doing my own email marketing. I personally don't like images in email. If I want more detail I'll click on the link. But don't distract me with images in email. BTW I use GMail and rarely allow images to display.
