Didn't you kind of answer your own question there? Use local or regional keywords. At least, that's what I do.

You should hire an expert SEO person. They know how to optimize your site faster and ethical way. Must use only Whitehat Method.

Ranking for local keywords is quite easy, unless it is a major (and I mean major) metro area.

Just use your city + product/service keywords. Pretty simple really.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

This says it all. I publish numerous local business websites and this is all I do. All the rest of it is the same as global SEO:

      • Quality content
      • Backlinks
      • Onsite optimization

Local SEO is awesome because you can see results fast. Most local businesses (in my industry anyway) focus on Adwords. The field is wide open for organic SEO and I'm in a reasonably large metro-area.

In fact, many of my competitors don't even do onsite optimization properly (i.e. same meta title on every page of the site).

Google Places is ideal for local searches if your offering a service. Or just build some high quality backlinks.. should be easy enough to rank for local keywords.

Getting your phone number in there can help too, especially as the local code will help to tie you down to the area.
If you play around on google and do some searches for real phone numbers, you'll be surprised to find how google treats them almost as words!
