Paypal Limited My Account - Lesson Learnt

After church today we headed out to lunch. I had just my Paypal debit card with me, which was DECLINED.

I'm thinking "Great, I KNOW there's plenty of money in there, what's the problem?".

So I login to my account and see that they want me to verify address and change my password. They explanation given is that they want to make sure no one else has logged into my account.

What happened is that I switched internet providers, and Paypal thought I was logging in from another state...I didn't even think of that as potentially being a problem. Moving or visiting a different state/country would seem obvious to me, but just changing Internet providers was not.

So I email a copy of my drivers license and also call them up. The lady I spoke to was very nice, helpful, and had the limit removed within just a minute or two at most.

LESSON LEARNT: When you change Internet providers, let Paypal know about it BEFORE they limit your account.

This is the FIRST time in over 10-years with that same Paypal account that I have had a limitation put on it, I was very happy to see it taken care of so quickly, and easily.

It seems like they are clmpaing down with the differing IP's now.

I'm not suprised people don't think of these things, since it shouldn't really be an issue, but on the flipside, as many have said before, if there were a legit case of someone tapping into our accounts from another place / IP and they put it into lockdown, we'd be nothing but grateful.

You'll have that sorted in no time I'm sure.

Yes, already got it sorted out.

      That's true.

It's really appreciable that paypal look after your accounts every time and lower down any such cases in which you blame paypal and there service. Paypal is really good service.

It's not just Paypal that changing IP addresses throws up red flags with.

I have had a couple of WSO sellers/creators accuse me of stealing their products or sharing them by giving access to others all simply because I use wi-fi.

The WSO Plus system logs all IPs.

So when your internet provider is down and you head out the door to the nearest shop with free wi-fi and have troubles and so then head to another free wi-fi shop it looks like your account has been accessed from multiple different places across the USA.

    Why is that?

Because in many cases the IP addresses these businesses have are issued and related to their CORPORATE OFFICE or HEADQUARTERS ADDRESS. Which means that even though the business might be right next door to another business, the IP address gives off the appearance of it being halfway to all the way across the country.

There is one street in my neighborhood where there is a Starbucks on the corner, a Burger King a block away, and then next door to the Burger King a McDonalds and then on the other side of the McDonalds a Denny's, all with free wi-fi. And then also, across the street, a Panera Bread, an AT&T and half a block farther down the street a T-Mobile shop. The cell providers don't provide free internet access, but they do allow you to test your devices on their network sometimes if you are a customer.

No real complaints here, as I understand the sellers have got to protect their products. It's just that very few of them seem to be aware of it, and it's particularly ironic when it happens with a product that mentions dealing with the mobile phone market!

Edit: On the other hand, Paypal hasn't given me any problem at all, even when accessing using two different devices each with a different cellular provider. YMMV, and maybe even vary by a lot, though.

    Hi,

I have 4 different sets of IPs from different providers.

    1. At the office

    2. At home

    3. Broadband, when travelling

    4. Hotel WiFi ( which I sometimes secure using a US-based VPN provider )

There have always been PayPal transactions for software, subscriptions, resource downloads, service payments and etc.

Probably, I would be in line to be limited in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the heads-up on what to do.

Your account was not limited. That is a whole different thing. They hold everything for 90 - 120 days on limited accounts.

It was a simple security precaution to protect you. You should be happy they are looking out for you, despite the short inconvenience.

Not limited? Hmmm...well when I logged into my account it said I had an "account limitation" and that I needed to take action to lift the limitation. I also received an email from paypal with the subject line of "Your account has been limited until we hear from you".

I would call that "limited"....not sure what else to call it.

But yes, I am happy they are looking after me.

This also has happened to me when I used a VPN Proxy and logged into my account. So if you are using proxies you have to watch out for this also.

I called them and they quickly took care of it.

Fortunately, the marketing I do now does not require Paypal.

There are many other alternatives out there now for folks marketing MLM, and other programs that Paypal does not like.

I would certainly look into them (like Alertpay, etc.)

They usually don't ban for that unless they suspect fraud. Normally they call you for that kind of issue.
