Do you cite references?

I've got my first blog site together now and I'm putting a few articles together but wanted your opinion before uploading them. Would you recommend that I cite references at the bottom of my article as per an academic paper? Would you post links to referenced material (or does this run the risk of sending traffic elsewhere)? In your experience, do references add credibility to website articles? Do you guys do it?
This blog is in the area of bodybuilding and strength training so it's not IM but I will be promoting some related products.
Regards,
Dave

For some niche articles I put a numerical superscript for citation. The references themselves, however, are on my website. There is no need to include a bibliography within the article itself unless the publication demands it (ie offline professional journal).

I recommending listing/linking to references because:

    1) It's ethical

    2) It can help you build relationships with the people you link to

    3) It serves your reader's needs better

    4) It enhances credibility

    5) It's been said that linking to high quality content can improve your search rankings (because it makes your site a hub for finding high quality content)

      Great advice!

Especially if you quote numbers or statistics, certainly link to where you got them.

Actually if you really like stats... think about posting infographics. They are hot right now. You can find and link to ones already out there or have one created. More info... Infographics & Data Visualizations - Visual.ly

I will sometimes say where the info came from when I give it in the article, such as: "A recent study by the XYZ says..." or "According to ABC..." but I only footnote in things like white papers.

Linking out to the research is good to do too--IMO it adds credibility to what you're saying and lets them get more info if they need it.

I would never claim to be an SEO expert, but I attended a presentation from a guy who's in bed with Google last fall and he said linking out to authoritative sites (as your sources would hopefully be) can actually help your ranking.
