Help Needed Forwarding Domain To Hostgator from 1and1

This is my first forwarding experience and my first Hostgator account.

I have parked domains at 1and1.com
I opened a reseller hosting account at Hostgator.
Hostgatore sent me two NS number ns1 and ns2.
At 1and1 forwarding only asked for 1 forwarding address.
I put in: http:xxx.xxxx.xxx.xx which was the ns1 address and 1and1 seemed happy. I have no idea whether they really are or not. Were both ns1 and ns2 needed? Am I in trouble already?
I can log into my reseller account with the domain I created.
I have no idea how to tell if/when the domain becomes active at Hostgator.

I created a FTP account at Hostgator. It does not work (yet).
I created an email address. My email program, Eudora, says the host does not exist.

I know, it takes a up to xx hours for the site to propagate. 'Gator says it take 24 to 48 hours to "propagate WORLD WIDE"

The email Hostgator sent me implies that I can work on the site prior to it going live. HOWEVER in the left panel of cpanel the webspace indicates 1 megabyte.
YIKES 1MB. That cannot be right. My digital camera pictures are bigger than that.

Do I wait two days and then ask questions?
What is my next step to figuring out when this site goes live?

At 1and1 I registere both domain and website and it is live in a few hours. This is the next day and I don't even know if what I did was correct.

ON EDIT: if I type in the URL into my webbrowser I get a green page with "Great Success !
Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server" at the top. Something is working but not what I need yet.

you usually need both dns numbers for the domain to catch at where ever you are transfering it too. Just change both number and you should be able to start working in it in a few minutes or even in a couple of hours at most.

Thanks, but 1and1 gave one box to insert only one address and it required HTTP:// in front of the dns numbers.

I think what they, 1&1, were trying to do was to have you FORWARD the domain, rather than change the NAMESERVERS - which is what you SHOULD do.
Is the domain name *registered* with 1&1?

      Bob,

I signed up with 1&1 hosting awhile ago & it came with a couple of free domain names. But in checking out the WHOIS, I saw that the domain name I registered belongs to 1&1 NOT me. (I'm leaving them for that reason & also because they charge too much. I get the same thing with Hostgator for cheaper.) You should check to see if you own the domain & can actually transfer it at all.

My domains are with 1and1 and I use hostgator. You have to edit the DNS settings and click on "MY NAME SERVER" in the setting's area and enter your ns1 and ns2 in the proper boxes. ns1 is your primary.

Cynthia is right and one other thing on transfers ....
If you have not been with your hosting for at least three (3) months,
        you can't tranfer at all.
All companys have this in their Terms Of Service.

If you can transfer, then open a hosting account and that Hosting
Company will do a free transfer. I sure do.

Probably shows that way because you set your domain names up using their free private registration! Otherwise if you used your personal information WHOIS would show in your name.

1and1 is not great for hosting but for domaining they're excellent although private registration comes with a small extra charge when they forward any mail regarding a particular domain name.

So all domains purchased through 1and1 you definitely own! Transfers do fall into a different category as explained in the other post. Just thought I'd clarify that info before a few passing through have a 1and1 domaining stress related heart attack...

    Cliff,
OK, I went into DNS at 1&1 instead of DESTINATION and entered
the two DNS numbers preceeded by http://
    looks like http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
and a second for the second NS address.

    What should destination be?

Cynthia, It could be that your WHO IS lookup was actually YOURS. 1and1 gives you FREE private registration. Anyone doing a WHO IS on you domain will see the registrars info instead of yours. I hides you name, address and phone number from prying eyes.

At GoDaddy, I pay for private registration to hide who actually owns my sites.

Kevin, as to letting Hostgator do the transfer for me. I'd really like to learn to do it myself. I have more domains to transfrer from 1&1 and GoDaddy.

Carey, these are well aged domain names thing 3 years, not 3 months. I kept them "just in case" and now it is time to do something with them.

So, I still need to figure out when the domain get transferred/propagated and why Hostgator only shows 1 megabyte of user space on a reseller account for this domain name.

I used to register my domains with other registrars & pay extra for privacy. But I now use Namecheap & they give you privacy for free.

I think you should consult the tutorial offered here above.

Re. 1 megabyte: on a Reseller account you are not allowed to "oversell" - there are strictly regulated amounts of resources. Consult HG support for details.

Thanks for the links to website transfer, BUT, I only need to redirect an a parked domain name from 1and1 to hostgator so I can create the webpage at hostgator. I am keeping 1and1 as the registrar.

Has anyone with a one and one account redirected a domain to hostgator?

I need to know what exacting I need to put in the spaces on the 1and1 DNS page.

    I have ns1 and ns2 numbers
Do I only put in the number? Do I add http:// in front of the number.
Is there a tutorial, youtube video somewhere.

    Again - consult the tutorial!

It seems you still haven't understood the difference between "forwarding a domain" and "changing the nameservers".

By changing the nameservers, you STILL have the domain *registered* at 1&1, but you are telling the world that the domain is now *hosted* at HostGator.

This is the normal way to do things.

Here is a Hostgator tutorial on this:

Sunnyman is right - what you need to do is change your DNS Settings, NOT "Forward your domain". They are 2 different things.

Your Hostagator account has Nameservers - these should be in your welcome email. For example, "ns463.websitewelcome.com" might be a Hostgator Nameserver setting. Hostgator has many servers, that is what their DNS nameserver settings look like. You should have 2.

In you 1&1 account, you select "DNS" for the domain you want to set up on Hostgator, then select "my nameservers" instead of "1&1 nameservers" in the menu. This will give you some places to put in your Hostgator nameserver settings. Usually your host gives you 2.
The main thing to remember is, you are NOT "forwarding" your domain - you are changing the "DNS settings", from 1&1's to your Hostgator settings.

If you can't figure it out, send me a PM. I experienced the same confusion when I firststarted using 1&1!

Ok. For the reseller account with Hostgator, you have to set up a new account for each new domain. Then you edit/upgrade the account to the amount of bandwith and resources each account is allowed to use. It's set to 1 MB by default, but you can go in and edit it to the amount of space you want to allow.

For 1and1, check the box beside your domain name. Then go to DNS settings tab and click "edit". This should give you two spaces to enter in your name server information from Hostgator - enter each one. It will take a day or so to propagate, but you should still be able to get in and change settings/install WP/ etc - it just won't show up on the home page for your domain until it's ready.

The two numbers you need are in the email that Hostgator sent you and the DNS (name server)setting is the one you want. If you call 1 and 1 they will either walk you through it or send an email with step by step instruction. The two numbers look like this ns.xxx.hostgator.com only the x's will be numbers.

If I can do it anyone can I'm really lacking with technical issues.

    Thanks Sonni,
I called 1and1 and they did walk me through it. I hope I understood the instructions and did it correctly. I now have the 24 hour wait for it to propagate.

Thanks for the rest of the answers. I will need to up other domains that I have had parked and some new ones I'll host at namecheap.

    Elliot,
Thanks. Your cleared up some confusion with "ns463.websitewelcome.com"
Hostgator also sent me ns1.mydomain.com = xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and I did not understand which one to use. I looked for places to plug in ns1 and ns2 addresses and the "ns463.websitewelcome.com" and "ns464.websitewelcome.com" was what I really need to plug in.

    Sunnyman,
LOL, that is the only thing I was clear about. I knew I did NOT want to forward a domain, I wanted to change the DNS settings and host the site at hostgator while it was registered at 1and1.......on that part I only sounded confused. I just did not know where to put in the information and exactly what to put in.

    Sandi,
My next stop is to go in a figure out how to edit that 1 megabyte to something that is realistic. I wonder why the default at 1 megabyt. I gigabyte would make more sense.

OK, next question? How do I increase the disk space at hostgator. I am in the cpanel and see disk usage, but it shows me a pie chart, not how to reset the space allocated for a website.

I guess there must be a manual on that site somewhere also. I need to download that when I find it.

    Hi Bob -

When you get a reseller account the only thing set up is the basic minimum and you need to do the rest. You will have the domain you used for the reseller account and that's probably where your at when you see 1MB. You can change that with your Web Host Manager.

When you first buy the account Host Gator will send you an email titled - Your HostGator Account Information. In that is your 2 name servers you will see something like - just example

    Your name servers:
    ns1233.hostgator.com
    ns1234.hostgator.com

You take this info to where you have your domain names and login to your domain name manager. I don't know exactly what that will look like at 1&1 but you want to get to DNS settings. You may see a list of your domains and perhaps click on one name and the be able to access DNS or you may have a link to click on but there will be a way to get there.

Most places require 2 DNS server names and then may have input boxes for additional name servers. The reason you want at least 2 name servers is if something happens to 1 you access via the other.

How fast you can use the actual domain names depends on many factors but I notice a difference in speed with different domain name registrars. In the email that came from Host Gator they also tell you how to access your reseller account before your domain name has propagated. This is accessing your site using the IP address they gave you. After your domain name has propagated you will use your domain name.

If you IP was - 999.999.999.9

To access your cpanel - http://999.999.999.9/cpanel

and you can view your site - http://999.999.999.9/~yourusername/

If you go to your site at this point there is a page you will see but it is a place holder page. I believe it is called - Getting Started. This place holder page is in public_html folder and if you look in public_html it will be called default.html It has links to all the stuff you need to get stared. It will show in your browser until you upload an index.html

What I did was download a copy of the default.html to a folder on my computer. If I want to access anything on the Get Started Page I can just go to that folder and click on it to open the page and it's still fully functional.

It's only 1 MB but you can change that if you think you need to but if you only using this account for your personal use you may not need to. This is done using the WHM you get with the reseller account. I think it is easier if I point you to the info than try to explain it. If your new to Host Gator you may not know where to look.

Besides the Getting Started page you will see if you go to your site check out these. On any Host Gator page go to the bottom and click sitemap. That's my favorite access page to just about everything. Look for the section titled - Support and you'll see Frequently Asked Questions and Web Hosting Tutorials.

or just go to The Web Hosting Tutorials at -

    Tutorials

should help you out a lot. They have videos on changing your DNS and also using the WHM (Web Host Manager). If your using your account only for yourself you'll still need to set up each domain you add with the WHM.

Here's were to fine info for the reseller account and WHM -

    http://www.hostgator.com/resellerinfo.html

If you use the FAQ or Knowledge Base they will list only the videos related to the topic you access but on the Web Hosting Tutorials page they are all listed in one place.

Also when you add a domain to your reseller account and then try to access it you may not find it in your browser. When you first add the domain that you create it will not have a place holder or default page or home page. To have it show up I usually open notepad and create a quick index.html or if I have something made upload that into public_html. As long as you have a index.html or htm or php you will have it show up in your browser. It you don't put something in there as an index page your browser won't be able find anything and it was a few days before I figured what was going on the first time I did it. I kept waiting and wondering. I didn't realize their won't be a place holder page automatically inserted or even why nothing showed up in the browser. I looked in public_html for the new domain I added ans saw it didn't have one so I added it and it instantly was found by the browser.

One more thing. You will use the same DNS name servers for any domains you add to your reseller account.

Also added a tip to download a copy of the default.html to a folder on your computer. I often go back and add something right after I post. After I read it I seem to think of something additional.
