First of all: what kind of programming language are you interested in? If you don't even know that... I suggest hiring a programmer first, because learning will take quite a few months if not years!
Or for web apps you can try uBot studio! Where did I put my affiliate link for that.. (j/k) but seriously uBot is really cool.

If you want to make applications work on PC search for C++, C# or maybe java and select one. Learnig a programming language basics is easy but programming a real application needs experience, time, hard work, continuous practicing. And programming is such a broad term, you must decide what type of software you want to code.
I am an embedded programmer (microcontrollers) and I program some pc interface software with gui too, but I have no clue how to code an internet based application.

    Hope this helps. Happy coding.

Softwares can be of many types. Do you want to go for Desktop based softwares, or web applications? Wordpress plugins are also products that you can sell. It would be nice if you can elaborate on what things you are planning to work upon.

If you are thinking of doing web development, this suggestion may work out for you.

Start off with basic HTML(You may probably know most of it). You can start off with PHP Mysql and Apache. Setting it up on local machine is quite easy. Type XAMPP in google, and you will get the home page of XAMPP. Download it and install it on your machine, and you can start programming with PHP. I think you also get perl with this package, don't remember exactly. Its pretty simple to set it up.

You may want to do small scripts before launching a big product. Once you get the hang of programming, language will not be a barrier for you.

    Regards

You should learn the concepts behind software development, and what is demanded rather than just going in guns blazing and learning a new programming language. Instead, understand how programs and dare I say, internet marketing works. This way when you hire people to develop things for you will have a clear idea of what you want, how it will be done and typically how much it will cost.

Like some of the above posters said, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. If you want to learn on your own I would recommend picking up a book from a library. Books are structured so you learn progressively instead of jumping tutorial to tutorial like you would online.

Likewise as others have mentioned software exists in many shapes so you can learn anything from assembly to iPhone sdk, the real question is what you want to do? The mindset of "I like to create my own softwares and sell it" is a completely wrong approach when it comes to programming...

Are any of the folks who responded in this thread able and willing to design desktop based software? How about "cloud" based script type software?

PM me - i have a couple of ideas for products.

    Thanks and warmest regards,

    1. Decide which types of software you would like to develop.
    2. Find a programming language which is most appropriate for the purpose.
    3. Learn the basics of selected programming language.
    4. Download free source codes, and start building software though them, improve knowledge.
    5. Start developing own software.

I would suggest buying a good book on Java or C/C++. Learn from that since you will be able to apply the concepts to other languages such as javacript or php. Learn the fundamentals of software development first.

If you learn something like java (NOT javascript - they are totally different) or c# (ie, object oriented C based programming languages), for the most part you can pick up other languages fairly easy.

BUT - there's a reason good experienced programmers make 80-120k a year (in the US).. not everyone has the aptitude, the ability to think abstractly, nor the logical analysis skills to be good at.
