Words from a Newbie about Upsells

There is something I would like to get off my chest. I am a total newbie to internet marketing. But I know enough to be resentful when I look into purchasing something that costs $50 only to find out that it has an upsell attach to it that goes for 4 times that. By the time I find out about the upsell my purchase has already gone to my credit card and I do not know how important the upsell is to how well the main product functions. Why can't the sellers of these products let potential buyers know what they are in for. I like people to be upfront with me as a general rule. This goes double in a business setting. I would like to know if others feel as I do.

People do it because it works. They are not sneaky. It is a marketing strategy that can bring good results.

Generally with an upsell there is an explanation of what you will be getting in the upsell. By the time you get to the upsell you should know what it's all about.

If you haven't a clue about Internet marketing then I agree you probably won't know at the time whether you want the upsell or not.

Upsells usually enhance what you have just purchased. Could be more in-depth information, some kind of tool to automate the process, extra coaching etc... Something that makes the product easier and better.

If you never use the product then you will probably never need the upsell.

Kim's right - 1) they work 2) the should be complimentary, not crucial to success.

You get upsold at McDonald's all the time "You want fries with that?"

Your McDonald's analogy is only correct if your premise #2 applies.

More often than not, in the IM world, the crucial element to success lies in the upsell. The upsell is NOT just a complimentary item. I think that's the ultimate beef (pun intended) of the OP.

If you order a BigMac, and somebody offers you fries, that's not the same as ordering a BigMac, only to find out that if you want the secret sauce, you have to pay more.

When it comes to most IM products, the upsell includes the secret sauce, even though the sales copy creates an expectation of the sauce is included.
