Typical. You offer something for free and the first request is from somebody that wants a review copy.

Well, I'm going to go against the grain here, but it's also not exactly what you're talking about, though similar.

You mention people giving this high value stuff for "free", but my example has a seller that charges something for what they offer. Here is the (slightly modified) text.

I normally charge a minimum of $0.05 per word for articles and there are 4,930 words total. You would pay $346.50 just for the articles if you were to purchase them separately. The 25-page guide would be $297. My partner charges $97 to create themes for people, which would be $485.00 for 5 themes. That adds up to a lot of value.
Those prices are very real, and it's made clear that that's what someone would pay if the bought each piece of the offer separately.

Do any of you see a problem with that?

    All the best,
    Michael

Five cents per word when you are a writer for hire is not the same as selling a book to the masses for five cents per word and it's BS to say otherwise.

But where does the quote say that? Is it not okay for someone to mention what they normally get for things? I don't see any trickery in that quote. It's there to convey the value of the offering and to let people know that it's not some $0.001/word author that slapped a bunch of stuff together.

When publishing companies advertise books they are selling, do they say, "This author gets $1.25 per word for his Time Magazine articles, so this book has a value of $6,250"?

Of course they don't! Why not? Because it's stupid and they suspect that their target audience would feel the same.

I get what you're saying, and here is where I see the difference: I don't think those dots are quite connected in that way. What it says is that a certain number of words and themes are valued at X, but it doesn't say "THIS offer is valued at Y instead of X and therefore you are saving Z".

It doesn't flat out say that the current offer has a certain value. The main purpose is to show that the two people who created the package charge a certain amount for their stuff, and that it isn't cheap stuff that people will be getting.

But I'm guessing you're going to say "that's stupid" too.

            Michael,

Perhaps if you included an amortized schedule of the cost of the computer that was used to type the words up it would help your argument.

Especially if it was a really expensive Mac. :p

But the value of the writing comes from the author, not the type of computer it was written on. I see nothing wrong with my example. The point is to show that it was written and created by people who don't sell cheap stuff.

Perhaps it's a matter of semantics, but I could have a problem with it if it didn't say "...if you were to purchase them separately", and if it said that the value of the package itself was the same as if it were a custom job. But because both of those points are satisfied, I really don't think that's what EBR is even talking about in the OP. (At least not the way I'm reading it.)

              All the best,
              Michael

p.s. As opposed to a really cheap Mac?

You're right for the most part.

          BUT...

They sure as heck do say things like "Author of Best Sellers such as 'This Book Rocks' and 'The Most Awesomest Book Ever'", or "Mrs. Author has sold 3,000,000 copies of her books" (or variations thereof).

But that doesn't mean the current book will be a best seller, or sell that many copies. So, why do they do THAT?

          All the best,

Like you said Michael the prices are very real so I wouldn't have a problem with that however $12,076,227.05 (or something similar) and it's free. Even in my short time on here I have learn't to take most sales pages and claims with a pinch of salt and look further into the actual product.

        LOL

        Good call!

Combining that tool with what EBR is talking about could create sales letters that are even more outrageous.

It would have the added benefit of providing "proof" of value to anybody who asked for it.
