Domain Purchase Question - Pls Answer :)

I'm still having an issue trying to find/purchase the perfect domain for my niche...

First off - I would like to guage some opinions here and ask:

What is the minimum number of local search results you guys draw the line at when determining which long-tail keyword you want to target?

For example, I found a decent long-tail EMD, but it only has 590 local search results.....just wondering if something like this would be worth the long-term effort?

Thanks in advance!

Is the 590 an exact search?

It all depends on conversion, if they long tail term you are targetting is a local term then it could be worth it as you can monitise by leasing out the website to local companies.

For me, I normally use exact and with not more than 20,000 global searches and not less than 1,000

    Another question....

Say for example, I want to target the keyword "How To Create Wicker Baskets" but the domain name howtocreatewickerbaskets.com is taken, BUT createwickerbaskets.net is available....

Would I be able to purchase createwickerbaskets.net but still target and rank for 'how to create wicker baskets'?? - or should I instead focus on targeting and ranking for 'create wicker baskets' instead??

Please offer your suggestions, I really want to learn this - thank you!!

Is the 590 an exact search?

    Also,

it could be worth it as you can monitise by leasing out the website to local companies.
Thanks for this suggestion, but I'm trying to make a niche site that I can monetize, market, and promote for my own long-term success, by my own methods - which (at the moment) have nothing to do with other peoples business's in any way. =/

      Hi,
      1. 590 exact locals searches is very, very low. My min is 1,000 but it has to be a no brainer for comp at that level or forget it, not worth any real effort at that low volume.

      2. Yes you can get the .net or even the .org (.org ranks better). Unless this is a business card site. I.E. this is one you want people to remember your url and go type it in to find you (off your business card as an example) then only .com will do.

        Brekat23:

Here's my take on your questions -

590 local search results is low, HOWEVER, it still can be profitable to your business to be ranked for the term, especially if it is an exact match.

I like to stick with dot coms rather than "settling" for a dot net or dot info. Dot com is the extension of almost all reputable commercial businesses and your dot com (all other things being equal) will be worth more than other extensions now and in the future if you ever sell your business.

If you can't register "how to create wicker baskets" for an exact match, or "create wicker baskets" try adding a word so that the keywords (create wicker baskets) still appear in your chosen name. Some suggestions:
-see how to create wicker baskets
        -I create wicker baskets
        -create wicker baskets fast
        -create wicker baskets now
-how to create wicker baskets cheaply
        -create wicker baskets home
        -create wicker baskets central

You get the point - be creative to get your keyword phrase in the title, but also the phrase should make sense so it's more easily remembered.

Good luck with your new business.

You shouldn't cut the numbers that close, keyword tools are known for their inflated figures and inaccuracies (keyword tools inflating the count).

The numbers will depend on how you're monetizing the site, an Adsense click is a lot different than an affiliate sale. The cost per click also helps to determine how profitable the keyword is. And if searchengines will be your main source of traffic.

Here's a couple of links on the traffic you can expect IF you reach Google's first page. You also need to factor in the conversion percentage.

How Much Money is a Top Google Ranking Worth to Your Business?
Top Google Result Gets 36.4% of Clicks [Study] - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

You should also do an exact match search and download the csv file to get a monthly breakdown of the traffic. Google and Wordtracker's keyword tool gives you a monthly average of the previous 12 months (can make a major difference for trendy or fad items).

JMO but for a domain that's really low. I like to guesstimate around 5% of the search number (2000 = 100 visitors, 1st page average minus the 1st and last listing). And times that by your conversion percentage, roughly 2-5% or 2-5 clicks/sales. And determine the search volume you'll need from that. So 590 would be roughly 4 months for a 100 visitors IF you get to the first page.

You don't need a perfect domain anme, all you really need is a domain name. In the time it has taken you to write this thread and the one from the other day, you could have been adding content to something like BestWickerbaskets dot com or WonderfulWickerBaskets dot com or any of a number of other domains whcih would let you move forward immediately.

Results from the adwords tool are all approximations and the results of adding searches for similar terms and then stepping them down or up with a coefficient.

You are not going to make a mistake in chosing a domain name. Setting aside all its "content farm" issues, Ehow is a successful domain that is not an exact match domain, or Google or Yahoo or Bing or Ning or Jing or any of those whose domain name does not tell you what they do.

Pick a domain with "wicker" in it and get your project going.

590 not a big issues , just that is the search result is on the top ? That the main thing you need to concern.
If you got the main keywords with high search result, then that the best one.

Beside that i feel the domain you try to have is too long . I understand it a long tail keywords but wasn't it too long and hard to remember?
