.info VS .co.uk Which One Is Better?

Matt Cutts "A top-level domain (TLD registry) will offer domains for under $4. The result will be another TLD blighted by spammy domain registrations."
.info and .co.uk, I wonder which one to choose. I'm not targeting UK traffic. but both extensions about $4.99/yr

I have only only a little knowledge on domains, so your help would be highly appreciated!

Sorry but I have to disagree with that. .info will rank both locally and internationally.

If the domain name you are after is gone just add a z or a v on the end of it and register the .com, .org or .net. These are called stop letters and google completely ignores them treating the domain like the real thing as it does not make sense. I have lots of sites in the #1 spot that have this stop letter and they rank just as fast.

If you do a little searching, you can usually find discounts that will land you a .com for that price. Godaddy occasionally offers them for 99 cents for example.

edit: also .info's are $1.99 with Namecheap all the time.

Well if you're not targeting UK don't get a UK extension. These will naturally rank faster in the UK and generally be a little more difficult to rank worldwide.

.info can work but they are not as good as .com (even if you can't get your desired domain name).

Domain extention really doesn't have too much of an effect on rankings if you have a strong link building structure anyway so my advise would be just register your domain ASAP so that you can start the link building process.

This entire thread is full of misinformation and factually incorrect statements.

This is completely wrong. They don't compare at all. .info is a top-level domain, and .co.uk is a national extension, which nobody should use unless they're trying specifically to rank on Google searches made from the UK for a site hosted in the UK. There are endless threads here with videos of Google's Matt Cutts explaining this clearly and unambiguously.

GoDaddy continually offers them for just under $1 (they come to just over $1 with the ICANN fee added) - free privacy protection if you buy 5+ in one transaction.

They're $2.99 at Namecheap (free privacy protection).

      This is completely wrong.

TLD-extensions don't affect SEO/rankings in any way. A .info is no different for SEO from a .com. (There may be other reasons, such as resale, for preferring a .com, but SEO isn't one of them).

Anyone open-minded enough to see some more discussion on the point of ".info's" and SEO might also like to see some of the points made by people who have actually tested it themselves, rather than regurgitating baseless urban myths, here, here, here, here, here and there are 100 other theads, some of them with links to videos of Matt Cutts, sections of Google's WebMaster Central blog and so on, where this matter is explained factually.

As explained openly and repeatedly by Google, top-level domain extensions have NO effect on rankings, whether you have any link-building structure or not.

Personally, I would take .info. (My customers prefer to see that extension. They tell me it seems less "salesy" and "commercial". That's very good for establishing credibility and trust.)

.me is actually considered by Google to be a top-level domain extension for international traffic, now. (This changed recently). Personally, I would take the .info.

Marketers like .com names, usually. Customers often prefer to see .info (if it's an "informational" sort of site). After the research and discussions with people on my lists, a couple of years ago, about what they prefer, my business is built mostly on .info domain-names now. I do buy the .com version as well (to make sure nobody else does), but usually I just redirect those to the .info's I'm using, which rank exactly the same as any other TLD, just as they always have done.

I guess with $4.99 you can have a .com domain. But if insist with this .info and .uk, i suggest you for .info since you are not into marketing.

.INFO is a lame domain. I had not such luck with that. Get a .COM in any condition. I learned this a whole lot later. It's obvious that the .COM is gone but you have to come up with other great names.

Try Domain Name Search and you can quickly search for available .com versions.

They've often seen people with the letters "SEO" in either their usernames or their signature-files in forums, saying it, and they just believe and repeat it according to the "doctrine of ostensible authority". Once they've taken that as part of their belief-set, they typically ignore, or fail to notice, or refuse to look at any contrary/conflicting evidence (such as what Google openly and repeatedly tells everyone!).

It's all part of the Urban Myth School of internet marketing, but I'm afraid it's par for the course: misinformation is everywhere. :p

I suspect also that marketers, because they know .info domains cost $1, rather than about $8 or whatever for a .com, to register for the first year, instinctively think of them as "cheap". (Customers don't).

I've even once or twice seen some very gullible people suggesting/repeating that "they rank badly because Google thinks they're cheap because they sell for $1 and are used by spammers and scammers"!!

Of course the reality is that far more .com's are used by spammers and scammers, partly because there are overwhelmingly more .com's issued.

To all you senior people who know better: Please refer these types of questions to the SEO section in the future. Otherwise, you're wasting your time answering a question only to have the answer deleted because it's in the wrong part of the forum.
