Newbie Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

I thought it might be beneficial for those who are new to start a thread about different mistakes newbies make when they get started at affiliate marketing.

I think that one of the biggest mistakes newbies make is jump into Google Adwords, bid on broad, untargeted keywords, spend way more than they should per click, and as a result, throw away a bunch of money on Adwords.

Does anyone care to chime in on other mistakes newbies make? It doesn't necessarily have to be about Adwords, but about affiliate marketing in general.

I think the biggest mistake that most new affiliate marketers make is that they program hop. What I mean is they don't stick with something until they have it masters. For example, if you started out and you had no budget, then you might (and I would recommend) start with article marketing. This is because it is free and not difficult. Plus it is great.

Then, the newbie might only write a handful of article before they are enticed by an ebook for $50 that will teach them something else. Then, they go through the ebook and repeat the pattern.

You have to pick a few products, a marketing method or two, and continue to work with them until you master them. Then, move on to using more methods.

Another thing I think newbies make the mistake of doing is they don't put in the work. You have to consistently work at affiliate marketing before you get to where you are making good money. Shoot I have been article marketing for nearly a year and I am just now getting to where I can live on the money I am making. It takes time and work.

  • Great comments, Benjamin. It is true that a lot of newbies are "enticed" by new ebooks that come out, so they decide to buy, thinking that it will "magically" help them turn things around. And you are right about not putting in the work - its easy to keep learning, but its an entirely different matter to put into practice what you have learned.

One mistake many newbies make is to compete in the super competitive "how to make money" niche when in my opinion is simply 10x easier to compete and win in other niches.

    Hope This Helps!
