I highly recommend Acid Xpress v7 which is free and can be downloaded from ACIDplanet.com: Free Downloads: ACID Xpress

This latest version is quite powerful compared to older versions, but still very easy to use and comes with a few getting started tutorials. Basically you can record your voice etc, edit the recording quite easily, and there's even punch in recording. What this enables you to do is easily select a tiny portion of the recording that may not have turned out so well, and rerecord just that tiny portion. It will automatically go into record when it reaches that point.

Of course with Acid Xpress, you can take things a step further and very simply create your own music underneath using freely available Acid wav loops. It's very simple, as you just select audio parts such as a drum loop, guitar riff etc, and just draw them on the timeline.

Mp3 and wav files can be saved also. So it has pretty much all you need.

    Definitely worth checking.

That sounds cool. I tried audacity a long time ago and
never figured it out... so I'm averse, which is a mini-lesson
in the psychology of why people won't buy your thing
but will buy somebody else's thing - because your thing
reminds them of something they failed with before and
the experience transfers the perception to your
innocent product which isn't even like the thing
the person failed with in the first place... but he
perceives it that way and that's all that matters.

Personally I use Adobe Audition, but it's really overpriced and expensive. But, it's easy to use, and very effective. I've been using it since back in the old days when it was Cool Edit(I think??).

I can actually play music and stuff and have recording
gear in storage in CA. I just wanted something so I
can make a long, droning, mega-CD course in which
I talk and for which people give me piles of money.

Audible works great if you want to mix tracks for your own music. That's how I originally got into Cool Edit. But, now it's mostly to mix voice, and sometimes to take my MP3 courses and speed them up for my Zune, that sort of thing.

The nice thing about Audible(and I don't know if this is the case with the others, although probably). Is that you can change almost everything, you can apply affects like simulating your recording as if you were recording in a church, or increasing the depth and tone of your voice, etc.

I don't know, I like it, it works for me. But, I probably had more money than sense at the time I bought it. This economy has cured that problem for me.

Somewhere else to look is Music Software - Computer Music Resources - Shareware Music Machine When you click on a category you can then select 'freeware' + your operating system etc to narrow down results. When searching for free Windows recording software, I got to this page - Windows Vista XP 2000 NT Music Software: Recording, Free (Shareware Music Machine) There appear to be some interesting programs listed.
