With all the Occupy Wall Street talk going on now, there is a version that continues to affect and infect Internet marketing more now than ever. Spammers. They chase potential customers away, make them suspicious and skeptical of email offers and suck the life out of lucrative markets.

Even with government intervention, sophisticated email filters and bad mouthing, they still thrive. Legitimate marketers seem to be losing the battle. Is more drastic measures needed?

I tend to agree, but I'd rather see that get out of control than to keep seeing big business and government continue getting out of control.

Maybe that's part of the problem, everyone allowed themselves to be in control and therefore ... "under the control" of other entities. And those entities don't have the publics best interest as a priority.

Hopefully big business and big government will see it as a wake up call to change -- and not continue business as usual.

There's one thing that has always been differentiating spammers from legitimate marketers: value. If I buy a product, or subscribe for a service, I should get value from it.

Everybody on internet thinks of selling or making money, and get the wrong idea on how to do it by the easiest possible ways. Sure thing, they can sell products, but they can not provide the value that legitimate marketers do.

I don't promote any product, but I do buy some. I subscribed to 2 lists, at the same time. One was of a possible spammer/non legitimate marketer, and one was legitimate. In one week, i unsubscribed from the spammer's list, and its been 1 year on a legitimate list, who provides me products that has been evaluated by him. I trust him, and I do spend some time clicking on his links. Why? Because he has earned my respect and trust for providing me EXACTLY what I thought when I joined the list.

Don't get discouraged by a spammer, because they will be caught sooner or later. But you, being the one who is actually providing value for a customer, will always win.

You made some excellent points on the difference between spammers and legitimate marketers. I'd just like to add that a legitimate marketer provides me the value "I want." Because I imagine most spammers feel they're providing value to some extent, so they think everyone will too. But do I really want discount Viagra pills from China or similar offers stuffed in my email box everyday? Not!

Where there is a problem, there is an opportunity. Because 'spammers' have incidentally gravitated to that type of extremist rhetoric in their pitches, differentiating yourself with a different tone and using logical pitches rather than emotional provocation is something you must consider.

There are not many people who understand this logic. Where there is a problem, there is an opportunity.

Spammers also make people who take "target marketing" seriously, stand out from the crowd. Sure it takes work, research and knowledge of your customers. But they appreciate it. I know I do. And those are the people I open up my wallet or debit card to. That's something spammers and "get-the money-and run" marketers will never understand.
