Hi all,

I am just curious how you guys feel about utilizing "review copies" in the classifieds/WSO section. I did a search for this and didn't seem to find anything, so I apologize if this has already been addressed.

I got to thinking about this when a previous poster asked about setting up an escrow deal with some of the higher-priced WSO's. I think escrow is a great idea, but I also think that giving out a review copy to a reputable warrior would go a long way as well. A review copy would really help some of the newer warriors get off their feet and gain a good reputation within the forum as well.

I personally plan on initiating my first WSO in the next day or so, and I'd love to give out a review copy to an established warrior so that I can add some credibility to my post.

I know that they utilize review copies at DP, but they seem to abuse the whole "review system" thing and thus seem to expect it from EVERY product. I just think this would be great for unestablished warriors.

So is this allowed here, frowned upon? etc...

Any thoughts?

It can be a good idea and may serve to gain some credibility. Usually, if the seller wants to give any review copies, they will do so prior to launching their WSO. I think it's poor form to ask for a review copy in someone's WSO thread.

I was just wondering the same. So would the classifieds section be the place to ask for reviews? Do I have to pay to post to the classified section?

You can also get some feed back on the product before it goes live, also how it can be improved. Then you can improve or clear anything up that is unclear before you go live. Plus the fact that a member can give the honest review in your thread.

    Hi Jim,

I saw a thread a few days ago whose OP voiced disappointment over so many people asking for reviews and then all the reviewers send in crap testimonials or sending reviews in before even reviewing the product. It's not frowned upon, but you have to be careful how you word your review request. You might want to ask for honest feedback instead of requiring glowing testimonials from your reviewers (as I've seen a couple times).

Another way of getting testimonials could be to offer your WSO product for a ridiculously low price like $1-$7 or whatever seems ridiculous for your product type. Then limit this stupidly low price for 10 warriors and raise the price afterwards. If your product is good, people will post their feedback or email you without being asked, so you can use those messages as your testimonials.

    Good luck,

I think if the WSO creator OFFERS a review copy or two then it's fair game..

But I think requesting a review copy is not good practice.. I am a firm believer in buying the products you are going to review..

Have you tried looking out for people in your niche?

With each product I create, I always supply review copies to a small handful of people. I've approached some warriors via PM in the past, as well as non-warriors I thought would be interested.

I usually select each person based on their area of expertise or their niche. I want someone who is experienced or somewhat knowledgable in the area I need. In some cases - depending on the product - I may select people who have no knowledge whatsoever in that area. In those cases, these people would have an interest in the subject matter.

I would never make a post in a WSO and ask for a review copy of anything. That's just downright rude.

However, if there's something I am interested in promoting as an affiliate, then I contact the person and ask for a review copy. This is of course outside the WF.

I think it's a great idea to have people review your products or services before you launch, but asking individual people to do so might burden them.

Maybe you could include a line in your signature that you're looking for reviewers?

I generally give two review copies at each forum I advertise my software on. I do my review copies at 50% off and the reviewer must purchase at full price and receive a rebate of 50% after the review has been completed. It works well for me.
