eBay Affiliate + WordPress + phpBay = $232.30 net in 7 days

I, like so many others, have heard a lot about the eBay affiliate program, both good and bad. I've been an affiliate for several years, although I had never done anything with it since my interests lay in other areas.

But in late November I decided to give it a shot, since I really didn't have anything better to do at the time. Because I wanted to use WordPress, I looked around for a good plugin to display eBay auctions and purchased phpBay Pro. I could have used the free version of the plugin, but I really liked the features of the Pro version so I went ahead and purchased it.

I spent a few minutes getting to know how the plugin worked, then went ahead and setup this site: Discount Wii Shop.

As you can see, it is nothing special, just the basics. My total time invested in the site: ~3.5 hours.

I then put $200 in my Adwords account specifically for this site.

The site went live on November 28th, and in the last 3 days of November it earned $89 net.

On Dec 1 and Dec 2, I paused my Adwords campaign because the CPC was too outrageous due to it being Black Monday (avg CPC $6.00).

The Adwords Campaign was resumed on Dec 3 with $165.39 remaining and ran through late in the day on Dec 7. Commissions continued to trickle through for the next few days, for a 7 day total of $232.30 net.

Here are a couple of screenshots, the first being my eBay report for 12/3-12/9 and the second being my Adwords campaign report.

I'm not putting this up here to brag, or to ask for kudos. I just want you to understand that the money is out there for the taking...

If you'll just take action.

I have been with ebay and phpBay for almost 2 years now and all I can say is that I have made thousands with it.

    • You are right, TelZilla and cliffmaster. There is lots of money to be made with this program, you just have to find the right niche.

The key to the PPC side of it is that you MUST choose keywords that are going to get you hungry buyers. That means that your keywords have to be targeted.

For example, if you were selling Wii, you need to be bidding on keywords such as "buy wii console" or "cheap wii bundle". I always use double quotes to get my ads to trigger when those exact words used in Google.

Best of all, I finally made the $40 ACRU tier so life is really good right now.

Glad to hear others are doing well with this program!

Right on brother. I love my WP-eBay-phpBay sites! I haven't even used Adwords and they make money. A nice passive income stream. Sure nothing to retire on but it's nice trickle. Especially since after the first initial setup it's hands-free.

BTW-that's one of the main reasons I got your very cool theme. Always looking for sweet themes for my eBay niche stores.

Your post has inspired me to deal more with AdWords and PPC. I gotta stop being chicken about it.

My sweetest commission came from someone who bought a car and my site was an archery site! But they must have ended up buying a car while still with my cookie and I got the commission. Hint: I'm now setting up car related sites.

Just remember to use "" and/or [] for your keywords, set it up for search only, avoid the content and partner networks, and you should be fine. I wouldn't bid all that much either. If you have good content, some original articles, your quality score should be fine.

I've considered it. I've got several car related domains just sitting around gathering dust...

LOL, I've got to get more time...is it possible to squeeze an extra 2-3 hours in a 24 hour day? I could definitely use it.

I'm going to try it this week! I'm going to put a $100 to try it out. What do you suggest...should I try it on my best site? Figuring if it's making money already with SEO that it should fare well with PPC traffic or pick one of my so-so or newer sites?

It's a simple business model that works. With all of the stuff available on eBay, there are literally thousands of niches that you could easily target. I wish you the best with it.

I too like the Wordpress+Ebay niche sites. You might want to consider using yahoo PPC to drive traffic too. I have found that clicks are cheaper and sales are just as good. If you can find a good group of buyers that only cost 5 cents to get them there, then you've got a good niche.

Also, I used to use Php Bay (free one) but found something more powerful in Wordbay (also free). Lots more features then phpbay, including many feature that the paid version of phpbay has. the only thing I wish it had is zip code targeting, but other than that its great.

I was wondering did you send the traffic to specific landing page or a specific page/post or just to the main page i.e. domain.com?

Since I didn't want to put too much time and energy into the site, I just sent all traffic to the home page. I don't necessarily recommend doing the same thing. It would all depend on what your particular niche is on whether or not it would pay off for you to do so.

                      Only testing will tell.

You could easily setup a campaign with targeted keywords and ad copy for each individual page/post. Honestly, I could have gotten more targeted traffic doing it that way, and a better conversion rate, but I was being lazy.

If you take the time to send sets of keywords to a targeted landing page, you will see your quality score and conversions go up.

When I was linking my adwords groups to the home page, my quality score was around 6.

When I replaced the link with a targeted landing page, my quality score went to a 9!

I've never had a 9 before so that was pretty amazing I thought.

It does take more time to do this, but it is well worth it!

And in this case, less is more. Less money spent on advertising = More money in the bank. I've used yahoo some, but not a whole bunch. After I get my next product out, I may give it another look.

That my friend is entirely up to you.

Although I'd probably test both to see what happens. Make sure you do split testing on your ads, but only change one thing at a time. Always go with the best performer, and then split test again.

I've flipped many ebay- affiliate-wp blogs on Ebay but never considered actually keeping or making blogs myself and monetize them with my phpBay-Pro plugin and adsense, in partnership with my ebay affiliate program!

    What a klutz!!!

Darryl, i've no experience of ppc but could drive traffic using articles.

Thanks for an inspirational post man. Bingo, just got another income stream

VRE (Virtual Real Estate) is the key to a strong passive income stream. I believe keeping the producers and flipping the "under-performers" would be a good business model to follow. But it's up to you.

I was about to try BANS when they first came out but decided to go with WordPress based sites because of the incredible flexibility of WordPress...SEO...thousands of themes and plugins...ability to grow site on autopilot, etc. The capabilities of WordPress seem to grow daily.

Hmmm one more question, wordpress doesn't really need to pay anything [Just like blogger, etc] only if you wish to have your own domain name right? Can i use Xsitepro to integrate into wordpress or is there any website that have alot of wordpress themes to use from? appreciate someone can help. Thanks!

There are thousands of themes available for WordPress. Just use google to find them, or go to WeblogToolsCollection.com. You wouldn't need xsitepro to edit them. It's been years since I even looked at xsitepro, so I can't even remember how to use it.

After using phpbay to set up this site, I can tell you right off, it's easy, you can integrate it with thousands of different WordPress themes, and it is profitable.

I honestly did this just to see if it would make money, and I spent literally no time researching it. I just figured that since the Wii is popular, it would be a good product to promote, even if it is saturated.

Granted if I decide to build more of these sites, and I probably will, I'll definitely spend some more time researching the niche to target.

I built one site with BANS then I found phpBay and never did another BANS site. I love Wordpress. Google loves Wordpress. And I have thousands upon thousands of awesome Wordpress themes to choose from most free to boot!

BANS sites all looks like BANS sites. Plus Google already slapped them down hard. Of course a thin site is a thin site but BANS is under watch with Googs. That's not to say they won't do the same with phpBay and the others but like I said I haven't touched BANS since phpBay.

      UPDATE

I think I know what it was if you're talking about DiscountWiiShop, it was the big banner I added in a float. It's removed, and should look alright again. LOL I didn't check anything but the home page. Too funny. I wonder how many sales I missed because of that.

@krislisa - Everything is work unless you enjoy what you're doing. I enjoy learning about and trying new things when it comes to marketing. It's what I do, and it drives my wife nuts. But she still cashes the checks for some reason...

    @Spark -

    pick a niche
    get a domain
get hosting - I use Hostgator
use phpbay lite until you can afford to buy the Pro version.

create the site, and advertise, using as many of the free methods as you can, such as article directories, web directories, social bookmarking, etc. Search this forum for more ideas on advertising your site.

Then build a second site, and a third, etc.

Don't quit until you are satisfied with the income you are earning.

create the site, and advertise, using as many of the free methods as you can, such as article directories, web directories, social bookmarking, etc. Search this forum for more ideas on advertising your site.

Then build a second site, and a third, etc.

Don't quit until you are satisfied with the income you are earning.
Thanks for your fast reply! Hmmm...will do but i might get the bluehost.com since they are able to auto-install plus fast update on the site. Actually i have already thought of 2 niche market. Once i am have my ebay affiliates [How long does it take to registered as one? been waiting for few days..]

Understand that being IM is alot of hardwork just like any jobs..but once you understand how the whole theory works..woo!

Host Gator has Fantastico as well which means you can auto-install Wordpress. It takes about three clicks.

Google "host gator discount" and you'll see many discount codes where it's one penny for your first 30 days.

Use Go Daddy and Google "Go Daddy Coupon" or use this one: oyh3 and your .com domain will cost you around $7.40.

So if you start with phpBay lite you can have your first site up for less than $8.00! Isn't Internet marketing awesome! Now you still have to put the elbow grease to promote your site but like Darryl said after you build one--get to the next one and so on.

Use an action verb with your keyword for your domain like Darryl did with "discount". "Shop", "Buy", and "Search" are three of my faves.

If money is tight go with a shared plan. I think it's called "baby croc". You can host unlimited domains so you can add several domains under the one main account.

ic, I intend to get baby plan since it's able to host unlimited domains. Then using godaddy domain names should worth the try. Thanks guys!

What a great and generous post.

I must say I learned a lot from reading this and it particularly AWESOME to see someone who gets that the web is huge place, that there are millions of niches and isn't afraid to actually link to a live example their project.

Inspiring on many levels and it got me thinking about all kind of new stuff.

    Thank you.

Wordpress and Affiliate Products go hand in hand. I am actually using Datafeedr and Wordpress with Adwords ads and I am making around $300 per day across 5 sites.

All targeted niches, keyword focused. My quality score is 8 across the board. I am only using 25 keywords per site and I am right at $150 per day in Adwords costs. So a clean $150 in profit each day (average).

When they switched from Commission Junction, it took me about 4 days to get approved.

Datafeedr has Ebay as part of the datafeeds, but they mostly serve regular site's affiliate programs. the are currently serving something crazy like 1.5 million products through 10,000 affiliate programs.

It's a great setup. I love it because you are not tied to Ebay and PayPal and you can sell direct without the Ebay hickup in the sales process.

          Hi Michael,

          Stefan here from datafeedr.com

Maybe you're confusing Datafeedr with another service but right now eBay is not part of Datafeedr. We serve right now over 2500 merchants across 11 networks. Members can now choose from 58 million products. And that's just the beginning More coming soon...

          Thanks, Stefan

EPN+Wordpress+phpBay Pro has to be the easiest money I've made online. I can set up a site in a couple of hours, write some articles and the traffic comes trickling in. The money soon follows...

Spark - This was in a message I received from eBay last month:

              >> EDIT: I deleted the quote from eBay's message as I now believe I misinterpreted the intent. I'm sorry. I think I'll go back to lurking. << end edit

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is good to know what works and doesn't without having to buy expensive e-book.

When you do more campaigns you will find out what works and what does not and create a truly duplicable system.

    Good luck

This is worth looking into especially the Datafeedr.

Can this be done successfully without PPC?

Do I have to apply directly to Ebay now for the affiliate program?

    Thanks
