IM is NOT your business, unless...

You do it for others! What does that mean? It means that if you market other businesses online (not as an affiliate, but as a marketing firm), your business is internet marketing. If you promote Clickbank stuff, build niche sites, or anything else... IM is just how you promote your business.

Not only is this an important distinction, you can make a ton of money understanding this.

IM: article syndication, social bookmarking, video marketing, social media, PPC, CPA, PPV, etc.

Offline marketing (something 99% of 'IMers' ignore): flyers, radio ads, charity events, TV ads, newspaper ads, mall kiosks with giveaways (build a list of 5k in a month)....

Just thinking of yourself as an 'IMer' gets you stuck in the mindset of internet only, try branching out a little and enjoy the results.

If I'm understanding your point correctly, I'm not sure I agree. If I'm marketing something, and I'm doing so on the internet, then I'm an internet marketer on some level by definition. Of course, there is still a difference between someone who does nothing but the marketing side of things (meaning that they are marketing other people's products or services) and someone whose internet marketing is for the purpose of drumming up business for their own product or service.

You are undoubtedly an internet marketer, but that is not your business. Your business is whatever you are selling. Example: Car dealerships run a ton of TV ads. If you ask them what their business is, they'll say car salesman; not TV marketer. How you market your business and what your business is are different, that is the only point that I'm trying to make.
