Question about Amazon affiliate marketing

Someone please help me understand this:

If you're an Amazon affiliate, is having a good ranking on search engines the only way to promote the products?

    Certainly not. In fact SEO is perhaps the least effective method of marketing affiliate products. Try marketing to niche subscriber lists, write articles, solo ads, social media, etc. Some affiliates are writing articles and/or advertising in offline magazines, newspapers, presss releases, direct mail, postcards, telemarketing, etc.

      Hmmmm. I've never seen an Amazon affiliate product ad in a magazine or newspaper.

        Yeah, I rarely see Amazon affiliate products, if ever. Maybe a link or two here and there on very niche websites. I wonder how difficult it is for Amazon affiliates to get a sale?

          Actually, there are many Warriors who make a very good income with Amazon. It seems that earning an Amazon affiliate income is easier for some than it is for others.

          Above, when I said I had never seen an Amazon affiliate product ad in a magazine or newspaper it was tongue in cheek because the the previous poster evidently skimmed the original post and missed that it was about Amazon affiliate products rather than affiliate products in general.

            If you ever did see an affiliate ad with Amazon logos on it, you can be sure that the affiliate marketer is not making any money. Most buyers would just go right to the main website to order, bypassing the affiliate link. The key here is to advertise one product (no reference to Amazon) with a link to your review/sales page. A phone number will dramatically increase conversions.

            It is only against Amazon's TOS to link to the Amazon website/products directly in your email marketing. But as with offline ads, the email promotions should point to a stand alone product review/sales page.

          I can't speak for others but I have no trouble. Every time I run out of things to do in my other endeavors I build another Amazon site. Not huge money yet but every drop in a rainstorm counts.

          Im betting you have clicked on many affiliate links that you did not know were Amazon and just one search for the word Amazon on this site will prive your statement wrong as there are many WF members making money on Amazon I have seen a couple show proof of $30,000 for one month

            Aside from the methods mentioned, you can also use Twitter to tweet your amazon product reviews on your blog. You can also post affiliate links in the reports or ebooks you give away/sell.

      Great list myob, however I was always under the impression that you could not use email marketing with amazon. Perhaps you are sending your subscribers to a page with amazon links and not sending the links in the emails themselves?

    Ranking good on Google is not the only way to drive traffic to a site promoting Amazon products, but it is one of the most effective. Depending on the niche, building a Facebook page and focusing on driving traffic to it to then direct people to your affiliate site can also work, but in my opinion this can be more time-consuming.

    You can promote Amazon products by paid advertising too. If you are using PPC to promote your products you may need a good website with detailed reviews on it for making the visitor click through to Amazon. Of course you will need to do a lot of work to identify good keywords for using in your campaigns.

    If you do not want to spend any money on advertising you can follow the tips given by others above. A very good way to rank on the first page of Google is to have an exact match keyword for your domain which you will need to use in your title and header as well. Some long-tailed keywords have a good number of searches but less competition. Your work will be to find them.

    SEO was very effective for me when I was doing Amazon affiliate sites, but I'm sure there are other useful ways to promote. Of course the key is to target people in the right niche no matter what way you go about it.
