Can you really make serious money with domain names?

I was on ebay yesterday and i saw someone selling the most stupid domain names, eg. some were in spanish...or really stupid names.

Like combination "obamapizza"... and they have them listed for X MILLION DOLLARS on ebay.

Just go on ebay, enter "domains" and then sort them highest ---> lowest.

I am asking since i myself tried to sell a few (in my opinion) good names a while ago on ebay, but i got NOTHING for them, not even getting my ebay fees back.

I have the impression that its very hard to sell "empty" domains, just the names.....and i would like to hear from people who actually flip domain names and whether there is ANY money in it?

Who, say, on sitepoint is so stupid and would pay X thousands for some random dumb names? If this REALLY works, people making thousands with this, i PROBABLY miss out a huge opportunity there....

  • I would take a look at eBay completed listings for domain sales. This will give you an idea of how much certain domains will earn. You have to watch out, however, with trademarked domains, and there are some additional laws regarding getting domains tpo profit from someone else's name.

    Hello George,

yes you can sell dormant domain names for a big price.

imagiethat.com was given out for $25,000.00
    myonlieoffice.biz was given for $500
    liveadworkabroad.com was given for $1,200
topix.com was given out for $1M
    248.com for $200,000

I doing the above, you will need certai qualities and consideration.

It really depends on the name. Some say all the good ones are gone, but that depends on what you call a good one. What is a throw away to one person is exactly what another is looking for.

I sold a domain name last year for $5,000.00 - my asking price. It was snapped up so fast, I later thought I probably could have sold it for more.

Also about a year ago, I was watching the bidding on a domain name at Godaddy, but didn't see the final sale price, because I got distracted with something else I was doing. I quit watching the bidding at the 1.5 million mark. I would love to have owned that one.

I have 15 domain names left that have not been developed into websites. They were carefully chosen over a period of 2 years. As an idea for a site came to mind, I spent time choosing a name for it. I have seen some domain names that I knew someone on crack had to have pulled out of the air, they were so bad.

So, to give you my answer to your question - yes you can make money with domains, but most people don't. Before you buy a domain name, think of what you would use it for. If you can see it attached to a website, then it's quit possible that someone else will see it that way to. Who knows - you may be able to sell it for $5,000.00 one day, without batting an eyelash.

Sure you can big money in domain name if you got a domain name that someone else is willing to pay big money for it, it's all about supply and demand, it's a fact that many people are earning money on just registering domain names and then sell them at a higher price.

Why not upload some content onto the domain. Maybe even make it a Wordpress site and then sell it? You will be making some revenue even if the domain does not eventually sell.
