600,000 searches in December… What is it worth? Please advice.

Hi everyone,

I would appreciate your advice on this please:

I own a domain name which I have over the last couple of months built into a simple website. I would like to sell the domain name now to anyone interested. I intend to list it for sale soon.

My problem is that I have no idea what to ask for the domain name.

I need your advice on how much you think I should sell.

I know it’s valuable and has a lot of potential because of the following reasons below:

- The domain name and website is presently Number One, on page one for its main keyword in the Yahoo search engine and several other searchengines. This is number one out of a search count of 306,000,000.

- The main keyword has a search volume according to Google keyword tool of over 600,000. Yes, that’s 600,000 searches on Google in the month of December 2008. It averages over 300,000 every month on Google.

- It’s presently rising fast in Google, but not in first page yet. This is because I have lots of backlinks to the website. I also added an extra 250 backlinks to the site last week from good PR sites. So it’s sure to rise really faster soon.

- It’s a keyword from the musical instrument playing industry, with lots of people paying good dollar for adwords. Other products can be promoted through its main keyword.

- The domain name already appears in over 725 places on the internet according to google. This is due to all the work I have been doing to spread the link on the web.

- One of the pages of the website is already a PR 1, ranked.

So, that’s it. I want to sell the domain name to raise some quick extra cash for the children’s charity I’m supporting. And I am busy building up my other sites which includes a membership site which is also profitable and demands my attention.

I’m not selling the website content because, the content is nothing special. It’s just a few articles and words. Any buyer could always build something more profitable since there are so many products to promote through it.

So what do you guys suggest I sell this domain name for?

      It's a 17 letter domain name.

      I haven't checked the stats, but it's number one on Yahoo search for the domain name keyword. Google shows 600,000 in december for the keyword which the domain name is based on.

      what a silly comment above , hes talking about selling the domain name and you want to talk about building lists?

      You will need info such as

      - Domain Age
      - Number of Current Backlinks
      - Daily/Monthly Traffic Stats.

    Where is it best to sell it off?
    Ebay, Sitepoint?
    I was considering sitepoint, but then I read a mail from a seller who sold several domains there to a buyer. And the buyer reversed the payment after receiving the domain transfer details.

    Paypal told the seller they couldn't do anything because it's not a physical product. I got this detail from the comments section on sitepoint.

    The seller has lost his domains and $700. They mention the fact that Ebay has a better protection.

    I also found this website: WebsiteBroker - Websites For Sale. Buy and sell websites and domain names!
    Does anyone know anthing about selling domains or sites there?

    I could consider selling the entire site.

      Just logged in to check my visitor stats from the hosting companying and it shows for January 2009 month so far= 2912 hits

    Apart from the 2912 hits so far this month, the stats from the hosting company shows that 61% of the traffic is from Google.

    It appeared in page one on google for several good keyword phrases related and highly targeted to the niche.

    I don't want to reveal the domain unless I get a serious, interested buyer who PM's me a good bid.

      At that pace you are talking about roughly 3,000 hits a month average. Yet, you are Numero uno for a phrase that gets searched 600,000 times! That does not seem to add up. That is an avg. of only 1/200 clicks/searches or .5%

      Still, 3,000 targeted monthly visitors is not bad. I would strongly suggest finding a way to monetize it and make some money first then your domain/site will be worth a lot more, IMO.

        It's No.1 in Yahoo, not Google. The 600,000 is from google stats for december 2008. The average for the year is around 300,000 a month. This is Google stats, not Yahoo stats.

          Even with 300,000 that comes out to 1% viewing your site. With your site ranking #1 overall it is odd that only 1/100 that comes to that first page view your site. I would assume a 50% + viewing if you were #1 on the first page, maybe I am overlooking something.

    Well currently most of website buyer measure the price of the site on how much the site is earns

    You can get a value of your site by monthly earnings multiplied by 8 to 12 months earnings of the site. That is the base of the calculation, design, age,traffic, and niche is another factor.

      Keep in mind the term *hits* is not the same thing as *visitors*.

      For every file or image the server has to serve up you get a *hit*. That means you can get a lot of hits per each visit. You need to determine your visitor stats. Traffic means something, you can create a page that get 100 hits on every visit without much effort. That's not worth much.

        No its not silly. If hes supporting a childrens charity then I'm sure he'll want to support it for a longer time than just a one off gift ? Why sell something if you can build on it. With 600,000 searches, how many would opt in to a newsletter ? Then market of the list especially for the charity.

      Many, MANY Warriors will not reveal the names and/or niches of the sites they work with simply because it will create greater competition. The OP has clearly stated that they are not comfortable with revealing that info unless a serious offer is made.

      Seems to me that quite a lot of info has been given away here already for someone in the music industry niche to know whether or not they'd be interested; and all the OP is asking for is a rough estimate of how much sites like this typically go for (or that's how I read it, at least).

      Nelaffiliate - you're probably going to want to talk with a few website brokers to get a good idea of what it's worth. You should be able to get a free consultation from a few of them, which will give you a good idea of what you're looking for. You can also use something like this Web Site Value Calculator to give you a rough starting point.

      Anyway, I'll butt out now. Just my 2p. worth. Good luck

        Thanks again Jcoolbaugh. I don't want to reeal the domain name here to protect the market for the eventual buyer. Of course, I'm aware I have to reveal the domain eventually. How will I make a sale otherwise?
