Help please... Made my first video but now it looks poor !

Hi guys,

a little help if anyone can

So yesterday I made my first ever video, its only about 3 minutes long so not big.

I am using a flip camcorder - a JVC Everio

The vid looked great quality on my computer but now its on Youtube and looks a right mess !!

Im gutted to be honest, Ive had over 400 views as I had many friends that stuck it on their facebook + bebo accounts so I dont really want to delete it as I have revealed something in that video.

So I guess this is for future reference.

When I go to produce the file from my video editing software it gives me 2 options of format:

1 - a windows media video format ( WMV )
2 - a Realvideo format ( when i select this is states this format does not support widescreen )

However both of these options then have a drop down menus of further options. Here are the screenshots of those:

WMV options

Realvideo options

So... Does anyone have any experience with this to advise what I am possibly doing wrong ??

The video is on my blog if you want to see what I mean ( In my signature ) about how it has turned out

Thankyou in advance to anyone helping !!

Dean

Dean it looks like it has been saved (or uploaded) at too low of a resolution.

Did you really set it for a 28K modem like the screenshot above?

You do need more light, and there is probably a white balance control somewhere on the camera. The red/orange look is caused by incandescent light with a camera set for daylight.

      Couple of things:

First, forget about RealMedia...it's proprietary streaming tech and worthless for what you're trying to do.

Try the highest quality settings you can for WMV at least 640x480 side for SD playback

Get better lighting. This will help a bunch. And check for a white balance control as suggested...

Try adding &fmt=18 to the URL of your newly uploaded video for HQ playback.

Of course, in general, the tool you're trying to use doesn't seem totally suited for a professional job...more of a consumer product?

Pick the HD quality encoding for best result and then compress it to an flv with different software.
In such programs there are always options for "custom" settings. Set the size you' d like (for example 640x480) set the frame rate (for example 15 fps) set the encoding quality, audio quality etc etc. You can always create a 10 second test video and play with the settings.

      Banned
The problem with YouTube videos is that I can not see them as I am in Turkey!

There are some other countries as well that have banned You Tube.

Professional marketers should always host their own video, as well as put it on youtube. That way your video will be available to all and not reliant on a 3rd party site.

that &fmt=18 trick is pretty cool. looks like youtube maintains two versions of the video.. actually, i've also learned about adding &fmt=22 for widescreen(?).. but it doesn't always work though

btw Bruce I have to agree about what you said about the optimizeyourvideo site.. Josh gave my company a sneak preview of his methods sometime back and I was like "whaaat.. dude, how do you know all that stuff about Youtube?".. have to say it's some pretty wicked video optimization stuff

    1. Never encode with windows media unless that is going to be your final output.

    2. Always save as an uncompressed avi file or if you are working with HD save as an uncompressed HD file such as m2t etc.

    3. Upload the highest possible quality master video file you can at youtube while staying within their 1gb limit.

If you do that alone you will go a long way for improving your quality..

However note that with the current formula and changes at YT all standard quality yt video are going to look like garbage which is why they are not including HQ and HD links (for the videos that qualify) for users to view in higher quality.

Youtube's standard quality is garbage and the format and tool you used to encode your original file just made it worse because you uploaded a highly compressed file and youtube recompressed it.

If you must use compression I recommend that you avoid windows media at all costs. It will give you the crappiest results. You can use h.264 and higher bit rates and still get compression but retain a great deal of the quality so that what you do upload stays better looking.

Here is what I published recently about youtube quality issues:
