How to get traffic to a music artist's website

Hey everyone

I am wondering what is the best way to get traffic (for free) to a music artist's website, whether it be their own .com, or a myspace, or facebook, or whatever the artist is using as a "home" page.

Let's say there is an artist on facebook with really great music. They do everything right and have a page set up where "liking" the artist will unlock free downloads. But this artist is totally unknown. How, using the internet, can you drive traffic to get people to listen to this artist's music??

If you look at what most bands and artists are doing these days with the internet, they all have social media profiles, are on youtube, myspace, facebook, last.fm, reverbnation, etc. The thing is, all these websites are are just places to listen to the artists music and connect with the artist. Just by having a facebook band page set up alone does nothing to drive new fans to the page. Every band seems to be doing the same thing, they are using social media. But with facebook as the main social network, the old days of being able to friendblast friend requests all day long on myspace to get new fans no longer works, because you can't add people on facebook, they have too add, or like you (as i'm sure everyone knows)

Well, when people ask how to promote musicians online, most people will respond with facebook, twitter, etc. These are all great things, but they are all things to direct the traffic to to hear the music. They do not solve the need of where to get the traffic in the first place.

Any ideas, or thoughts?

    MySpace and Facebook!

Create a band profile on myspace and a fan page on facebook and promote them.

Do it for free by sharing the profiles around and hope for some viral activity.

You can also attrac views through YouTube and Fiverr gigs will help you out.

Well... the my point in my post was that while myspace and facebook are great things to direct traffic to, they don't really help in generating NEW fans and getting the traffic in the first place. Every band has facebook and myspace profiles, but most don't have tons of fans... because most don't know how and where to get NEW fans from. How can a completely independent unknown artist go about getting tons and tons of fans and likes on facebook if they're unkown and no one knows about them? Where do their fans come from?

Well on myspace as I said you can send friend requests. But no one really uses myspace anymore and everyone uses facebook.

The problem with a band page on facebook is you can't just send out friend requests all day.
How exactly do you promote the facebook page and get people to go to it?
If you have already shared the profiles around, how do you go about getting NEW potential fans to go to it and listen to it?

Well MySpace and Facebook pages are good funnels to drive traffic to your site. The aim for creating these is to go viral.

For example, on Facebook when someone likes a bands fanpage all of their friends see that they like it from their News Feed, if some of THOSE like it then their friends friends will see it and so on.

Your issue is driving the traffic in the first place. Fiverr is a great place to connect with people who already have large Facebook and Myspace accounts and are willing to share your pages with thousands of people for just $5 (well, they only get like $4), but this is a great way to initiate this.

SEO is not going to work well here, because music is such a personal and undescribable thing.

You need to connect with networks. Get involved in various musician constents online, connect with local radio stations to get the word out. There is a digital radio station here in Australia which is dedicated to playing unsigned artists, if there is a similar thing in your area GET ON IT!

Attract fans firstly to the network entities like your Facebook page before getting them to your website if the traffic is from the network. For example, Facebook users are more likely to visit a link to a Facebook page than a third party website. Once they hit that you can entice them to hit to website.

        Hope this helps.

I would also consider using video sharing sites such as YouTube to get the word out.

Creating a pleasing video with the artist's music showcased as the soundtrack would be a good way to get some exposure. Your artist should also have their own YT channel for their music.

Put a link to the website in the YT description area as well as mention the website in the video.

Exactly, try to create a profile on myspace or try to promote via facebook like anyone else.

In the worst part, you can try aiming for keywords and optimize via seo

I am facing a similar issue with my bands fanpage. Here's some methods I am considering.

    1) Build a reveal page and give away a track or two to get people to like your page.

    2) Find as many facebook pages and groups that relate to your genre of music and start posting on their walls. The idea being to position yourself as a regular. Remember to switch to use facebook as your band page when doing this.

    3) I know of a gig on fiverr where a guy is offering to post your facebook page to the fans of his band of hwich he has 4000. I've no idea of the legitmacy of his claim but hey its only 5 bucks.

    4) Make stickers with the facebook page url and give them away at gigs. You can also stick them everywhere you go.

    5) Include your fanpage on all your posters, cds and other merch. The more eyes that see this the better.

    6) Get your drummer to post your facebook fanpage url on his kick drum skin.

    7) Run a contest with your current fanbase for the fan who gets the most new people to like your page.

Hope that gets your brain pumping. Remember to think outside the box. You can promote your urls anywhere where people congregate. Now that everyone has facebook on their phones its even easie for them to access your page from where ever they are.

If you try any of these methods PM me and let me know how you go.

I wouldn't think that setting the page to where you only get free downloads if you "like" them is the best idea.

I think that the best way to go is to create an interesting YouTube video and start sharing it for free.

My cousin's husband used to be in a popular band (as in hit-radio-station-popular) but he now does other projects instead. Recently, he played guitar for a 9(ish) year old girl covering a song. It stood out because the girl was so young, yet her voice was phenomenal. They posted it on YouTube and he shared it through his personal Facebook. (I just checked. He has less than 1000 friends, so it's not like he had a gazillion.) So then people on his list (people he has a real relationship with, not bought on fiverr types) start sharing it to their friends. And everyone is making it personal, by saying, "Check out my friend/husband/cousin's husband/whatever and this awesome little girl." It spread like wildfire and within a few weeks, they had an invitation to play on Ellen.

Another key thing with music groups is to find those trendsetters. I think there's another word for this in The Tipping Point, but I'm too sleepy to think about it right now. These people have large circles of friends and are always a step ahead of what's "in". Once they start to think something's cool, the group of friends starts to follow.

    Love,
    Shannon

thanks guys those are all good ideas!
Fiverr could definately be a great way of getting new fans fast.

I was just looking around google trying to find out answers to my problem of how to get new fans...

I was looking at this blog which is really interesting!
    makeitinmusic DOT posterous DOT com

And I found out about something which is exactly what I'm looking for, except for the fact that it costs money

    www (DOT) reverbnation (DOT) com/promoteit

This seems like a really good tool for getting new fans fast... seems like it takes little to no work too. If only there was a service like this that was free! lol

Well I am definately going to check promoteit out when I have some extra money... looks like a really really awesome idea!!!

seems really crazy to me... if I had a big budget to use with this, this would really be a great way to get tons of new fans fast

    has anyone tried it out?

this is how I did with my music, twitter

enough said I built up a HUGE twitter following (which is easy to do)

and as your building up this twitter following your letting them know about your music
    asking them for their opinion

in music you want to do something called DTF which stands for direct-to-fan where you actually communicate with the fan base your building every step of the way.

You can even apply IM tactics to music, I know I did and it worked well for me

Use a Twitter Client like Tweetdeck and within the software follow the hashtag #Music and #bands and start communicating with others as you see search results come in.

We've had tremendous success with jango.com. Jango gets your music out there on Internet radio, which surprisingly has hundreds of thousands of listeners. It's how we built up our fan list, in fact.

I think first you should ask who are the people who listen his songs, or what would be. You need to have a fan profile.

Than you should ask where you can find those people.

If you're looking to build your brand/name online, Web2.0 like facebook, twitter, linkedin is the way to go! And don't forget to continue posting your original, or covers on youtube as well There are many people who got famous from just Youtube alone.

Nevertheless, I would recommend you to start with at least a facebook fanpage, twitter account and not to mention, an youtube account.

      Covers on You Tube.

Hiring a few 'fans' off of Fiverr.

Check locally and see what you can get away with. Doing local gigs will help you get 'real' fans who will then translate to Facebook fans, which translate to statistics online that help you out.

Build one song and then check to see if you can find indie radios and call them. Tell them you're a new band and that they can play that one song for free, just to get the word out. Be careful to find bands that play songs that play what you play!! Otherwise you'll be wasting your time.
