Low traffic longtail keyword question.

Hello all,
I've been looking at a sub-niche in a very competitive market, that's just about to take off, (looking at goggle insight, and increasing search trends in recent months). My newbie question is would it be wise to target a large number of long tail keywords that have less than 100 searches/month rather than to go after the more competitive keywords in the niche.
The longtail keywords would be for example specific product names with 'does it work', 'buy', 'scam' included in search and they have fewer than 20k in exact matches on google.

Is it a sensible approach to go after such low search volumes?

Getting traffic from many as opposed to traffic from a few.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

The thing about targeting long tail phrases is that usually they actually contain the high competition phrases as well, so you're actually targeting them anyway!

Creating content with long tail phrases and related terms (i.e LSI) allows you to target phrases and keywords across the whole spectrum as well as getting traffic for keywords and phrases you never even thought of!

My question is how are you planning on making any money with about 3 searches a day?

Plus, there are going to be 9 other people on the front page competing for those 3 possible visitors.

There is nothing wrong with a little competition as long as you know you too can compete.

I know you are just starting out but at least try for a couple hundred searches a day. 3000 searches a month is a 100 a day. Try to look for at least 3000 a month with low competition and use a free Blogger to use while you learn.

Once you figure that out, find another related keyword with 12,000 searches a month which is 400 a day and try to compete with that.

Don't start blowing your money until you know how to get a few hundred hits a day.
Then, use the money you make from your "free" sites to invest back into your business.

      Thanks for the advice everyone.

Matt, Your right about the monetization part, but can anyone tell me what would be considered "low competition" for a keyword with 3000 searches a month?

    suncit,

Go to the Google Keyword Tool and type in your keyword.
Then on the top right you will see Approx Avg Search Volume this is an estimate of the monthly searches.

Over on the left you will see Advertiser Competition with an image of a bar graph. A full bar is very high competition and an empty bar is very low competition and everything in between.

You want to find one that is less than half full and you should be able to compete.

Of course as you learn more by reading the posts here at the forum, you will become better and better at being able to compete with tougher niches.

Does that make sense? Play around with that keyword tool and get an idea of how many different keywords out there get quite a few searches with very little competition.
