Schrödinger's Cat Can Teach You a Lot About Marketing, If Only You Will Listen

I love thought experiments, as I have found that a lot can be learned from them.

The thought experiment I hear about most often is "Schrödinger's cat".

In this thread, I want to tap your memory to prove something that could be valuable to all marketers reading this thread.

Because we are online, we visit a lot of websites. We grab information from a diverse set of Internet properties.

In this thought experiment, it is important that we do not consider websites that we go to all of the time.

It is important not to consider sites that we visit all of the time, sites like the Warrior Forum, because although we like these sites, we may not remember WHY we liked them on our first visit. We just know that we do like them, and as a result, we have made them a habit.

What I want you to do is to consider a website that you went to recently for the first time, a site that you remember by name now.

It is important that you do remember the name of the website, without looking at your bookmarks.

There are two things I want you to tell us about those websites:
  1. What is the name of the website?
  2. What about that website stands out in your mind?

If enough people participate in this thread, I believe it will help us as marketers understand how to better present our websites to our visitors -- to organize our websites in such a way that we attract more followers, who will visit our websites regularly.

This kind of thing is important to marketers because if we can create websites that people want to remember and can easily remember, then that sets up the potential for people to visit more than once.

Repeat traffic and repeat sales are often the cheapest kind of traffic to get, and both have the potential to put a lot more money in our pockets.

Let's get this thing started and see where it might take us.

I don't mean to sound like Heisenberg here, but there's an uncertainty about any of us knowing the real reasons why a given website stands out in our mind.

    At least in principle...:p

But for me it has to be content.

And I'm too old to remember the last website I went to.

I'd really hate anyone to think I'm making a derogatory comment, in any way, about the OP, but just occasionally the title's so good that you know it's going to be pretty difficult for the thread to live up to it ...

Ok, I'll play ... I went (a couple of hours ago) for the first time to a site called andaluciaboutique.com and what stands out in my mind about it was the slide-show at the top-right of the landing page.

The only problem with a subject / title like this one is: "WTF is Schrödinger's Cat?"

My first thought was something along the lines of marketing reminding me more of Pavlov's dog experiment.

However, I did visit a site this morning that sticks out, magnatag.com and the first thing that struck me was how ugly it was (to my eye) because it was just Jam Cram packed with - well go look for yourself. The blue and white would be ok but you put tiny font site list a mile long on the left, and pics a tthe top, side, below, text EVERYWHERE... Clutter Clutter!

but then, under the main box.. still seems chaotic at first glance to my eye but is probably the only thing I do like about the site. It has tabs, and each tab visually takes you where you might want to go.

But since I want a whiteboard for organization.. and all this site showed (to me anyway) is organization, yes, but crammed so full who could ever see the order? How to organize so much stuff it's still useless to you- that's what that site showed me *chuckle*

Sometimes sites go WAY OVERBOARD trying to look professional while cramming so much information down your throat you choke on it.

At which point professional goes right out the window.

I have a hard time remember what day it is, and you want me to remember details about a recent website I visited . . . that I don't frequent often?

Ok, the only new site I remember visiting lately is anybeat.com. What is most memorable is the name, and that the website is very stark and cold looking. Almost barren.
