Reporting posts, and other administrivia

A few notes for the new folks, and reminders for the more experienced members.

To report a post, use the small red triangle with the black exclamation point in the center. That is to the lower left of each post, under the poster's name and profile info. This button (the "Report Post" icon) will open a form which you can fill in to explain why you believe the post should be removed, or whatever other action you believe should be taken.

Once you submit that report, it goes to the moderators to be looked at.

If enough members report any single post, it will become invisible on the board, and will be reviewed by the moderators. If whichever mod sees it believes it should have been removed, the post will be left invisible or "hard deleted," which means it's gone for good.

You should report any post you believe breaks the rules, is somehow destructive, is in the wrong section, or is otherwise a problem.

If you're reporting a Private Message, the same icon appears above the PM and to the right. It works the same way.

Except in unusual cases, "Report Post" is what you use to let us know there's a problem. PMing a moderator individually isn't going to be as fast as using that button. The help desk isn't there for issues that can be reported using the Report Post function.

....

There seems to be some confusion about what should be in the reviews section. Posts that ask for comparisons or opinions of a single specific piece of software should go in Reviews. Posts asking how to accomplish a specific task with a piece of software are NOT review material. Also, posts which ask which is the best service, product, or piece of software for a specific purpose are NOT reviews.

....

If you're confused about why a post was deleted, read this.

If you haven't read the main rules thread yet, it's here. Read it.

There's a long thread at the top on member moderation. I recommend reading posts 1 and 3 at the least. You can skip the rest if you like. Most of the useful info is in those two posts.

Posts about marketing local businesses using the Internet belong in the confusingly named offline marketing section.

For general info for new members, read this.

....

We now return you to your regularly scheduled mayhem.

Oooh, I've always slightly misunderstood these (sorry - this really isn't "trivially obvious"?).

So ... when someone posts in the Main Marketing Forum something asking which backlinking service Warriors recommend (which happens very often), it's right to report that?

But although it invites reviews, it really lives in "SEO", not in "Reviews"; is that right?

    Thanks, Paul.

I've read those rules before, but one think I never understood exactly is where it says "Anyone Caught Promoting The Same Site/Offer Will Be Deleted.". The same site/offer? Same as what? What am I missing here?

That is for the paid SEO posters who promote the same sites or for those who promote pre-made affiliate pages. There could be other examples, as well, but those are the two most common situations that I can think of.

That specific example should be in SEO, not Main Discussion, yes.

The part that sometimes confuses people is the difference between recommendations and reviews. Reviews are supposed to be in-depth overviews of the features and pitfalls of specific products. Also, comparisons of the same for multiple competing products.

    "I <3 Bob's UberDorfer" is not a review.

I mentioned this in a recent post, but let me add to the above...

Folks -- especially senior members -- stop replying to posts that are in the wrong section. Sometimes it's easy to do, such as when you're browsing posts via the "Today's Posts" feature. But if you know you're in the main forum, then stop replying to all the SEO posts, copywriting posts, etc.

Instead, report the post and move on. If it gets sent to the right section, then reply to it to your heart's content.

My thoughts: Replying to posts in the wrong section just rewards the OP. And while some thread starters don't know any better, others do it BECAUSE they can light a thread on fire here. Either way, if we don't reply to these posts, it may help decrease the number of threads in the wrong section.

This was originally put in the rules because we had a rash of people posting nonsense or pointless one-liners for signature views for their affiliate links.

The current examples would be people who post links to pre-built templates hosted on their own sites, but all pointing to the same mentoring/coaching programs.

Note that if you are pointing to a legitimate review which you host on your own site and which points to an affiliate program, that's fine. If you're using a template provided by the merchant and you just add your name... not so fine.

Not here, at any rate. It's a smart strategy, just too open to abuse within the narrow confines of a forum.

    Ain't that the truth.

But hey, if we're going to have mayhem, it might as well be regular and scheduled, right? At least it's controlled that way.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.

Personally, I think that ought to be a sticky. While I can understand wanting to
keep those stickies to a bare minimum, coupled with some folks posting without
reading them first, could that maybe lessen the chance of someone asking why
his or her thread was deleted?

Anyway, just a personal thought. Thanks for knocking these into our thick skulls
    again, heh.

      Dave,

I think it might be a better idea if we just boiled all the content from some of those stickies down and put them where people could find them all in one place.

I think most of what's in that thread is also in the "Better member moderator" thread, along with the "Newbies - Please Read" post.

What would really help is for more of the members to point people to the appropriate rules post(s) when someone crosses one of the easy lines, like asking why a post was deleted. That's not something a person with little experience in forums would normally guess was a Bad Thing.

It might also help to use 48pt bold font for those thread titles as well... :p
