How do u determine - to offer upsell or not? (tricky)

For example u have 2 products. And user in the process of ordering first of them. In that process we can offer second product as an upsell.

How do u check that we need upsell or not? (i mean that user already bought second product or not). And what would u use to solve that problem?


I heard about CRM system, but maybe there are another way. Or, if u will reccomend to solve that problem with CRM - which would u recommend?

    If the user is buying the first product, then I would assume that they haven't purchased the second product yet and go ahead and offer them the upsell. If somehow or another they already have your second product, then they would just simply pass on the buying that second product. I wouldn't worry about trying to programmatically determine whether or not the buyer already has the second product. Just present it to them. If they already have it, then they'll simply pass on it.

    dmitch31 but here is the problem. Upsell usually have a discount or additional bonuses. And if we offer them second with discounts - he can be disappointed by that.
