Anyone use their OWN forum for Internet Marketing

I currently have two vBulletin Forums, one active, one not. There is no doubt that they can be a successful extension of a website or blog and increase reader interaction.

Just curious, does anyone else have own or manage a forum and do you monetize it or use it for internet marketing purposes?

Had a IM forum for some time but dropped the idea as soon as I realized most users prefer to make mistakes to learn their way - so no point to be online.

But will start a forum next year 100% dedicated to a small niche. My main question is the use of a normal forum platform or a website with full integration of Facebook Connect so people can share their ideas.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

The biggest thing about integration with Facebook, whether its commenting or a forum is the anonymity factor.

Some people prefer to keep their feelings and opinions anonymous and Facebook powered commenting does not allow them to do so. On the other hand, when there is actual accountability to people saying things, it tends to create better discussion and cuts out the trolls and spammers.

I most definitely do....I own a PR3 forum and post keyword stuffed threads all the time. Works like a charm

I actually opened up a number of forums over the years.. but it failed...

I learned that while it is easy to open one, it is freaking hard to manage one on a daily basis to grow the user base and the posts up.

Today, i stop trying and prefer to hang out at other people's forum for less effort and time :-)

They are certainly a tough thing to manage, especially when you couple that with managing an existing website.

It certainly helps to have designated moderators to help manage users and topics though. But for one person, IT'S TOUGH!
