Mods: Can You Verify Rules About Sig Files?

I know it is against the rules to show an affiliate link in someone's signature. The sites shown in the signature must be one that the person owns an interest.

However, I had heard at one time that non-standard fonts were prohibited in signature files, and off-size fonts were also prohibited.

And today, I have began to see tons of signature files with Times New Roman, instead of the standard (I believe Arial) font.

I have also noticed a lot of people using smaller font sizes than is normal.

Could you please verify the rules about signatures, so that we would know who to hit Report about and who to leave alone?

The rules specify using the "normal standard font size" and "any color as long as it's black", but it doesn't say anything about not being able to change the actual font.

    Edited to add another thought:

I don't see the harm if someone uses UNDERsized font. Since the rules do specify a line limit of 5 (6 if War Room member) with spaces included, I don't see how anyone would benefit particularly by using smaller than normal font. Not sure the admin sees it that way, of course.

I think those rules are open to some interpretation. My current view is that I don't care what font type it is, as long as they're not using special characters or Webdings or something really weird.

The font size shouldn't be larger than the default, but I don't see a problem with a smaller font. The exception to that might be if a member is using the smaller font to cram more links into their allotted lines than they'd have at the normal size -- but I have yet to see that particular situation.

This is just my personal take on it. I'm pretty sure the main intent of that rule was to stop people from using larger sizes.

I suspect that would be difficult to do that as well, since the sig file has a maximum character limit.

Why care about their signature that much? lol

It isn't harming you in any way. Nobody is forcing any of us to read it. If someone wants to make their sig so small that you need a magnifying glass to read it, then whatever.. its their choice. lol

Oh, ok. Let's just make up our own rules.

Did you ever think that making a smaller sig file might be a way to hide that you are using it to link to a site purely for SEO and spammers might take on such a tactic?

Are you sure it doesn't hurt anyone?

Im not saying to make up your own rules.

I'm just saying that this whole "members are moderators" thing has some people getting a little, well.. petty.

I'm admin on a gaming site, we see things that you couldn't imagine on our forums.. lol I'm just saying that someone's signature being smaller than usual isn't half as bad as some of the other things that go on.

As for the spammers, like I said, the member-mods will easily take care of them. Its easy to spot a spammer or bot.

Especially the failed XRumer attempts. lol

But anyway yeah, thats all.. wasnt saying to create your own rules. Just maybe stop trying to be a forum-nazi about everything unless it directly impacts YOU personally.. "Oh god his signature is 2 sizes too small! Call the police!" haha gimme a break..

But again, this is just an opinion.

    Not petty. Just curious.

Besides, I did not ask for my own knowledge, but everyone who might want to know.

Ahhhh calm down Bill, I'm not trying to attack you here. I'm just speaking about everybody in general. Not you. lol

And no Jill.. I don't see how someone else having a small signature "screws" ANYBODY.

Not you, not me, not even Bill here.

If you take the time to actually pull out your microscope, squint your eyes and investigate their sig, then you click on their link and buy their product, you can't blame anybody but yourself. As they say, don't hate the player, hate the game. LOL!!

Obviously I don't have a signature with some mini text, so what do I have to gain here by arguing my point..?

I'm just saying what I think about the subject.. no need to be mean about anything. Whatever happened to being able to have a debate without people getting their feelings hurt? haha

Not to take a hard left hand turn here, but how in the world are we supposed to verify that a site is legit--especially in an age of domain who-is protection?

And I'm not talking about affiliate pages that look the same. How do we determine that someone really OWNS an interest in the site promoted in the sig line.

Something I have always wondered about.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

I let the real mods worry about that.

Well, as "Whos That Guru" so put it:

        Whose feelings were hurt?

You know what? I don't care. It does not impact me personally if someone else is emotionally unstable. :p

Well, members here are MODS. So, the chore is distributed to all of us.

Now, since I don't have to worry about that particular panel, I can nit pick on things like a tiny signature file.

      I would like to know.

It was an honest and simple request from Bill.

He is just trying to be a good citizen, and help others keep the forum clean and up to par.

      It is an admirable quality.
