What do you think about using Google Books to source content for my website?

I've been reading some books with Google Books, and I though of using some excerpts of the books and use them on my website.

Imagine for example, a website with cooking recipes, I'll go to Google Books, search for books with cooking recipes, and copy/paste the recipes on my website.

I've searched in Google for the excerpts I want to use, and Google presents only 1 result, that's the result of that same book.

So the question is: Do you think that if I copy/paste content from Google Books, Google will hammer my website?

Also, does somebody here already tried to do this?
I mean, instead of buying articles at 5$ you could use Google Books for free, I almost think this is too good to work, but that's why I'm asking for your opinion.

    Hi Carvalho,

...it would appear then, that not many others are doing it.

Do you think you will be creating value? What about adding original content to the excerpts, which adds the value?

Be sure to look into the terms of use before building websites from other people's content.

Yes I know that, but talking about recipes (it's actually a website I have), the recipes are all the same, for example, if it says to use 2 onions, I can't change and say 4 onions.

About the terms of use, there are book that aren't protected by copyright, because some of them got over 100 years, and there's really some nice stuff there.

I just think that Google may penalize my website for using contents from Google Books, I guess I'll give it a try, to be on "the safe side", I'll try to change a little the excerpts.

      Carvalho:

You need to be careful when using Google books that you don't infringe on someone's copyright. Just because a book is found in Google books, you shouldn't assume that you can freely use the content.

I think what you are referring to is "public domain" information.

If the work was published in 1922 or before then it is in the public domain. Anything after that date, you need to do a search and check to see whether the copyright was renewed or not.

I know people use these (Google) books without regard to copyright all the time. Some just blatantly try to sell Google books "as is" which shouldn't be done (read Google's fine print.)

      Hope this helps . . .
