what are some other good payment processors that don't charge as high of an amount per transaction. Google checkout is out of the picture bcuz it doesn't work in Canada.

I am wondering if I'll be better off getting a merchant account.

    AlertPay is good and Canada based

    www.safepaysolutions.com

    All are great payment processors. Google Checkout is great for anyone if they are US based.

    I share your pain, I wish there were an equally popular alternative, but search all you want, there will not be any other place where you can have instant access to your cash, I'm surprised to hear about the high transaction charge in Canada,


    I feel the prices are excellent, its just the horror stories about frozen accounts if you have lots of money entering your accounts etc that really concern me.

      Does PayPal charge higher fees in Canada?

      I haven't seen a payment processor in the US that charges lower fees than PayPal, including merchant accounts (which have monthly fees, too).

        I'm going to go with setting up a merchant account.

        A big pain in the butt of course, but I think in the long run, you're better off.

    Hi BFMan,

    It'd be worth checking into merchant accounts first to see what kind of fees you'll be paying there.

    Normally there is a setup fee that can go into the hundreds, and then a monthly fee, and then the per-transaction fee which is usually only slightly less than Paypals.

    Paypal actually has REALLY cheap fees, even compared to your own merchant account.

    I have a friend who owns a music shop, and even though they have a merchant account for the shop, they're using Paypal on their website because the cost is pretty much the same, and it was easier to implement Paypal.

    So I'd check around at merchant account fees first!

    I'm talking about Australia, so I'm not sure what they're like in Canada.

      Well the merchants I have looked into do have lower fees but they have a monthly charge too. But also as braver mentioned earlier, it's also the concern of your account getting possibly frozen. Paypal has been notorious for that.

          I think if you can get one you should. Its smart to have alternatives. I use paypal and my own merchant account through www.powerpay.biz.com connected to an Payment Gateway to Accept Online Payments gateway to process my orders/run my business.

          For recurring memberships etc I never offer paypal as an option. I do not trust them and would rather control my own business in that area but for one time payments I offer them as an option because many people like to use paypal.

    I found that I had a higher conversion rate with a merchant account as compared to email. I guess it gives the customer a sense of trust. I had an a merchant account with Paymentech and liked it way better than PayPal even with the added fees.
