Which comments to approve on my blog?

Hey, fellow warriors. I'm wanting some advice from some of you experienced bloggers out there. My new blog http://wwwmanifestyourgoals has started getting comments and I'd appreciate some guidance on deciding what comments to mark as spam.

Should I delete any comments that have links that are totally unrelated to my site as a matter of course?

For example:

"Thank you for another fantastic blog." (With a link to a specific television model niche site).

I guess what I'm asking is are inappropriate links bad from a SEO perspective, or are there some advantages to approving them (as long as they are positive and not total garbage)?

Thanks!

Here is what I started doing to filter out spam. First when it is new, I allow unrelated comments, so people will come back. But they have their email there so send them a squeeze page with this: 'You are receiving this as you posted a comment on my web page.' Then your best ad with it.
If their email kicks back undeliverable, then I delete the comment as spam. If it get's sent OK, they get your ad, or newsletter, and then approve the comment. See if they come back for a another visit. Maybe not the best way to do it, but it works for me.

The idea of comments is to have other writers extend your article, so search engines find new relevant text on their next review, I would dump all flatter spam that doesn't address the subject, which might account for 99% of the comments you get.

Too many links out to splogs and other worthless sites can get you tabbed as a 'link farm', something you do not want to happen.

Generic one liners dropped for link juice don't do you any good. I routinely dump them.

    EDIT:

One way to get your comments dumped and your IP banned on any of my sites is to use anchor text as your name. It telegraphs that all you want is the link, and I'm not running an SEO service. You want an ad, buy an ad.

If you are using wordpress, then use akismet plugin. It will filter out the bad comments automatically and then you will get real comments. In that also, you may get few spam comments. So, if there is a link present in comment part then try to either remove that link or delete that comment completely.

I normally just suggest to use a spam filter like Akismet to stop the large majority of them, and when some slip through it really isn't a big deal if the comments just say something like "Wow, great post!"

Plus, you could always install a plugin that makes any links in posts nofollow.

Also, take a look at GASP for Wordpress. It worked wonders for my spam comments. Also, dump the spam commenters. They are using you for seo juice. Why should they get traffic, because you approved their useless comment?

It doesn't seem to me like bad English gets canned a lot, but if the posts aren't relevant you could start running into issues. There is no reason that viagra ads should be getting commented on your church's blog for example

You can approve any comments you want to.

If someone just wrote 'cool site' I wouldn't approve that because its just a brainless comment which wouldn't add value.

If they're hyper linking their site to their name in their comment, make extra sure that their comment adds value. If they put a link inside of their comment which does not relate than the comment isn't worth approving.
