College website marketing

I have an opportunity to develop my college's website. It might also be put up for bid. The inside information is that it was just discussed.

The website for the college honor society was already done by me.

A professor there who is a friend of mine who I created sites for told me that a company met with the college and all this company does is college sites. I'm wondering if I could make college websites my niche.

Does anyone have experience in the area?
Ever heard of this company?
Can you give me any suggestions on price?
Have you ever created a site for a University?

I am just brainstorming before I go in and try to grab the job before it goes up for bid.

Thanks

I talked to the professor friend earlier and he just suggested I create a proposal and not come off as a student wanting to do the colleges site.

I will be a computer science major and taking the colleges Networking and Security program next semester.

I want to focus on security for the site. Their current site was created by the librarian who knows little of web design and development. Granted it is mainly a front end and the sensitive information i.e. student records, online classes etc. are stored in secure ares on other sites.

I also have a portfolio of sites, mainly WP sites which I will show them along with my proposal. I would like to charge a recurring monthly maintenance charge and I want to justify the charge.

My day job is doing database support, business analysis and project management for a community college website. You better have your WCAG 2.0 accessabilty down cold. Be able to handle a lot of disagreement between the needs/wants of students, staff and faculty.

Also if you are going after state schools the selection/contracting/delivery/payment is a loonnggg cycle. So have deep pockets.

        Great stuff here.

@everyone: The textbook buying & selling and all of the other ideas are exactly what I am looking for. These things allow me to drive the potential price up.

I like the idea of keeping the price down to add the site to a portfolio but quite honestly I am tired of doing sites for a low price just because it will add to my long term credibilty.

I have two sites in line right now; one for a guy who wants to run for U.S. Senate and the college site both of which would round off my portfolio but...

The college site is a big responsibility and I must get paid....but I will also consider the long term benefits of claiming it in a portfolio.

When I was in college, I created a website for students to buy/sell/trade books and lecture notes. It was very successful. I sold it after graduating and the person who bought it drove it to the ground but I think a site like that would still work. If you're thinking about making college sites your niche, you could focus on this particular aspect of the niche.

Are you struggling what content to put on your college website? If your college is open minded, I think you can propose to have e-payment? Enable the e-payment for new student sign-ups and tuition fee renewal. This help to reduce the hassle of collecting fee from the students.

I don't suggest having monthly charges, that will turn them down.

Go ahead and do a proposal (you can add a term for maintenance if needed).

I also suggest do your BEST for the project because this will shoot your resume in the marketplace up. you want to get that project regarding less of the cost.

This about it will help you in marketplace
