As you become more successful do you change the way you market to people.

Hi All

I have been on someones list for 4 years now. After purchasing quite a few products from him I was actually on 6 of his lists and a member of 2 of his forums and follow him on his blog.

The guy is a very successful UK marketeer and I am sure if I mentioned his name a lot of you would know him.

I have learnt a lot from the guy and he as my full thanks for that. As I have developed my skills over the years I have also noticed how his sucess as improved. He is one of those guys that could earn $100,000 in a few days with a product launch.

At the beginning of the year he wrote on his blog his plans for the year. This included more product launches, higher ticket products etc.

Watching him over the year this is certainly what he as done with great success and I am sure his online income as at least doubled if not more.

However I have noticed a distinct change in the emails and the way he markets to his subscribers. Over the first few years I would say he would send a promo email once or twice a month with the rest of his emails giving great information to his subscribers for free. However this year as definately been different

I kept his emails in a seperate folder and looking back at them today (after receiving his latest email) I cannot find one email he sent in the last 6 months that was not promoting either one of his own products of as an affiliate for someone else's product. The sad thing is he seems to be promoting products that are not up to the standards he would probably set for his own products. I recently purchased a product he recommended and it was definately not at described on the tin. I do know though (because I used to be on the list of the person whose product it was) that the commissions for that product where quite substantial.

I feel the same as happened on his blog. Where his post seemed to be helpful and considerate his posts now seem to more of a sales pitch with links to his or others products.

Now I am not knocking the guy and good luck to him I will continue to admire him and will probably purchase one of his own products in the future if it suits my needs. However if I open one of his emails now and it is promoting a product for someone else I just delete it. Rightly or wrongly I get the distinct feeling he is promoting only for the commissions and not for the benefit of his subscribers.

I am also seriously considering removing myself from his list as where in the past I got apprx 6 emails a month it is now 2 -3 a week all of them promoting some product or other.

Anton

There is the tendency to offer less when you are no longer hungry for work. Its a natural human tendency. Not saying its right but you do work harder when you need the money. It may be something he is not even aware of doing. If you have learnt alot from him maybe you should communicate your concerns before marking him off

Just one more Guru I guess...Welcome to the world of Internet Marketing.

Shame he used to be better though...Always hate to see a good apple go bad. I guess good and bad are pretty relative to where you're standing though.

Sigh. It's a cycle I guess. Is it bad if I quote The Dark Knight? Who am I kidding...I don't care if it's bad or not!

Thanks Aaron Eckhart. Your scripted wisdom surpasses all expectation; if only that fire hadn't burnt your face off and made you all mean n' stuff.

I wouldn't have put it as strongly as he as gone bad. I still believe in his own products and that he gives value for money from these products.

It is just his whole marketing stratergy that has changed I was just wondering if you need to be so aggresive to jump your income to his level. It is not something I can see myself doing so maybe my income will always stay around the mark it is, who knows?

Do you think at the end of the day people only care for themselves and money?

I have noticed that when a so called GURU makes the BIGTIME they already have their big lists and do not seem to care about checking the quality of the products that they start promoting as an affiliate. Maybe as time goes on that will reverse as a trend ,It will have to or they will loose the list that they worked so hard to generate.

maybe he is not aware of what is happening

it could be that before he was writing his own stuff, and now he might have hired an outsourcer or has someone else writing his content and doesn't realize they are all sales pitches.

I would email him and ask him, might make him pull his head out of the sand and see what is going on.

Maybe he's learned that you can't make as much money if you 'waste' some of your emails and posts on content.

If it were you, and the options were $20,000 a year providing content or $150,000 a year for blasting out sales email after sales email what would YOU do?

      I'm not sure myself.

I've noticed this scenario from several IMers over the years.
One I met and asked about the change: response was literally "I have some one else doing all the work for those sites and never really deal with them directly anymore".
    I opt-ed out.
