Writing content for syndication

I'm trying to write content for a new site and I would appreciate advice from an article marketer.

I originally planned to build my site for everyone. In other words, the information is good but bland.

I've decided I would like to make it a lot edgy. The only problem is whether this would effect the amount of times it was picked up for syndication.

If I build my site with more of a personal edge, will people still want to use the articles?

    If you want to make money, then you need to write articles that give answers to problems that your niche market needs.

    Things get picked up and syndicated because you are offering content that those peoples members/subscribers need.

    You can always write anything you want however, it might not get picked up or make you any money at all.

    And I wouldn't combine the two. Whatever niche you are in, you need to stay in and around that topic on any article submission site. You want to be considered an authority on a subject but if you jump around, that won't happen.

    Controversy gets you published. To me, it's almost one of the essentials.

    Well, it depends what, exactly, you mean by "a lot edgy", of course.

    But it's my general approach, in many niches, and it works extremely well.

    That's only one of many reasons for which work can become syndicated. Not the main one, and a very competitive and difficult one; it's what everyone else is trying to do, really. Better and more interesting approaches are needed. "Edgy" can certainly be among the "better approaches".

    Which do you think will be more widely syndicated (assuming that both articles legitimately match their titles): an article called "Cauliflower Soup: Tasty Recipes For The Weekend" or one called "Cauliflower Soup: How To Avoid Poisoning Your Kids"?

    Think Reader's Digest. (I always keep them in mind as my model.)

    They are the ultimate syndicator. Every article is a reprint.

    They are still going strong because they have it down to a science. Look at their headlines on the cover. Look at their summaries on the stories. Look at the stories they choose and how they are written.

    Reader's Digest knows exactly what attracts people to pick up their magazine, what gets people to read.

    There really couldn't be a better education than to study what they do.

      Let me put on my publisher hat for a moment...

      Okay, let's see now. I have a choice between an article that's safe, bland and boring and an article that's going to greatly please or displease some portion of the readers. One that no one will remember, or one that everyone will react to, one way or another.

      Heck, I can write the boring one myself in my sleep. I'll take the one that sparks reactions, gets linked to, gets a discussion going (even if I have to put on my referee shirt and grab a whistle).

      Fin, while an edgier voice in an article may cut down the number of times it's picked up, it may very well do a better job of filtering in the people you really want and filtering out those who don't matter.

      It's not like distributing articles purely for links. You want people to engage in your content and click through to get more of it.
