Hey everyone. Still kind of new to the forum but I have been reading and learning with some tools.

I've done some work in the past, and even worked with a very successful sports website. Successful in traffic, but eventually folded because the person who owned the website couldn't make money off it.

Which brings me to something. I know a ton about sports, having played numerous in high school and one in college. I feel like if I could find a niche related to what I like, I would really begin to work harder to a specific goal. Of course, it would be worthless at this point if it's impossible to make money.

So has anyone specifically had success with sports-related stuff? Not gambling, because I'm not interested in getting into that part of the game, but other things related to sports.

I have a friend who owns a site dedicated to an English Premiere League football club - he makes an absolute mint.
How does he make the money? Does he do it with his own content, or is it like a forum where others discuss the club? Since his is more specific to club, has he ran into any legal troubles with that club?

Yes, there is a lot of money in sports.

And yes, there are people who make money directly by writing about sports.

But if you are starting out this is probably not the best route to go.

You already had your own experience as you stated above.

A more realistic approach is to focus on for example Golf and then start with selling advice and accessories. You can do that by establishing yourself as an expert (just publish a book on Amazon or Lulu).

Then you start to write on your blog and help your readers become better at playing Golf while you sell stuff to them by pointing out what is good and what is junk.

I've done ok ghost writing coaching guides for football, basketball, and hockey. Not sure how well they did selling, but the guy I wrote them for has requested more, so they must have been fairly successful.

Marianne - I'm interested in more on your friends site. Do you know what type of revenue per unique visit they make? I'm trying to compare some similar sports sites to understand how well monetized they are. Happy to chat in pm.

I make some useful side money blogging about my passion - rugby. Not a living but more than pays the rent. And more importantly to me I also get free tickets to almost all Wales games as sponsors get in touch, and have a bunch of other freebies sent my way fairly regular.

Another I know who is more pro about his rugby blogging (daily posts etc) makes a full time living, having partnered up with a company that runs one of those 'fantasy' pick your own team jobs.

There is money to be made, but for me sports blogging is best as a side income to allow me to fuel my passion - with the added bonus of freebies and chances to meet my heroes.

I remember Tim Ferris had a guy on his site who was getting paid to help pro baseball players with their swings. I think the article detailed how the guy went about getting this started.
