Here's my take on it.

It's not useless as long as your blog/website has a great value to your target audience and it provides quality information and free valuable tools.

Especially on a plugin official website, if I find the plugin truly useful, I won't hesitate to click on the donation button and share few $s.

I totally agree with Magiclouie. If the contents are very useful and blog owner is providing something great then even i dont hesitate to help him by donating few bucks !!

Recently I donated on a Mobile Community forum where people of the forum gives their hard work for FREE !!

Kelly, there are times when you actually like a few Blogs or websites.
The owner may be really kind to share some freebies and all.
This is where they expect to monetize the posts with link shorteners, adwords and donation buttons.

I have seen lots and lots of sites from where I DOWNLOAD softwares. They have a small please donate button.. It really works..

In the past I have posted helpful tutorials on my blog and included a "buy me a coffee" link to use if readers felt it was helpful. I was pleased with the response received and it was great to know I had helped.
